Pulled my back

BabyOnBoob · 28/05/2015 21:40

My back has been a bit duff for a while but yesterday when lifting dd, I felt something 'give'.

Well today I've been in a lot of pain with it, can't really lift dd (who just my bloody luck is a velcro baby).

I've been taking paracetamol and ibuprofen as well as using deep heat cream.

I've had some slight pains in my bum cheeks and down my legs, does this sound like sciatica?

How long will I be out of action, so to speak, for? I'm going to have to use the pram instead of the sling, which will probably go down like a fart at a funeral with madam.

When I have this it does tend to quite quickly i.e. within a couple of days. It does depend what you've done though. We have a drop in physio clinic at our local hospital - do you have anything like that nearby? They might be able to give you some advice on stretches/exercises you can do to help. If your back has been duff for a while I'd suggest trying a really good pilates class. I used to feel like my back would 'go' at the slightest provocation but doing pilates has really helped. My posture has improved and so has my core strength.

It does sound like a pinched nerve with the bum and leg pain.

I think they say half of people improve significantly within 2 weeks and 80% within 6 weeks. So it can be a slow process. Angry

If you can't function then a trip to the GP for stronger pain killers might be in order. But unless you develop red flag symptoms it is quite unlikely they would do anything other than pain killers and recommend you stay active.

Thanks for the replies. I was scared it might take a bit of time to heal Sad

Putting her in/out of the highchair or her jumperoo is agony, so yeah, might need a trip to the gp.

No I don't think there's a physio clinic nearby unfortunately.

Thank you and thanks for the link. It's really painful isn't it Sad

When I'm leaning over to put my baby on the floor to change her nappy and then picking her back up afterwards, it's excruciating.

The pains in my bum and legs are worse today. It makes me feel bloody depressed as I've got nobody to help me with my baby through the day and the pain is constant.

How long did it last for you?

It was short term - 3 or 4 days at its worst and I then had to be careful . ( winces at thought of you with little ones ! ) .

I did find ibroprufen helpful .

Can you avoid bending etc this weekend ? Walking is good though .

JasonsBum · 30/05/2015 10:29

I did exactly as you describe and Dr said it was a pulled muscle. It was so painful though. Ibuprofen gel and tablets are the way forward. And keep moving.

BabyOnBoob · 30/05/2015 11:14

Thank you both.

Yeah my dp can help with baby on a weekend, thank god!

I'm hopeful now it won't last months and months Smile

Really surprised as well that the advice on nhs website is to keep moving. I just wanted to lay in bed it's been that painful. Just the pain being constant as well has pissed me right off.

It WILL ease if you walk around. No heavy lifting (yes, I've got a toddler with a hefty appetite who likes to see things high up- Dr reckoned that's how it'd happened in the first place!) but a gentle amble about will ease the pain- and take your mind off it. If you stay in the same place you seize up, and it's extremely painful when you do try to move.
