URGENT Bump on the forehead - should I keep dd awake

DelGirl · 10/11/2006 20:10

We have been out earlier this evening and ptting dd to bed she fell and bumped her head on the door. There is a small lump on her forehead but no bruise as yet. Should I keep her awake and for how long> SHe seems ok in herself though she seemed slightly dazed momentarily after but then it is nearly 2 hours after her usual bed time.

If you do let her sleep you ought to wake her after a while... 1/2 - 1 hour, check she can rouse ok. I'm no medic tho. Ring nhs direct. Only they're bound to over react and send you to a and e.
good luck

zephyrcat · 10/11/2006 20:13

Personally I'd say she sounds ok to go to bed now as it's been a couple of hours - as long as she's not feeling sick at all. Just keep a check on her until you go to bed... I'm sure she'll be fine, poor little one!!

DelGirl · 10/11/2006 20:14

Thanks bizzi , well she's still awake now playing in her cot.

Anyone else have any experience of this

I thinkg she will be fine, I remember being told that if there is a bump on the outside then the swelling is going where it should and not inside IYSWIM

I agree with bizzi, go and tuck her in or stroke her and see if she rouses as she normally would

DelGirl · 10/11/2006 20:14

No, it's only happened about 15 minutes ago.

They always do it near bedtime! I would put her to bed, keep checking on her, and give her a prod if you're concerned. I think it's bumps to the back of the head that are potentially more worrying. And obviously if she lost consciousness, vomited, or seemed really disorientated or altered.

zephyrcat · 10/11/2006 20:15

Sorry misread the times

Tinkerboo · 10/11/2006 20:16

We were told to only panic if it was from height higher than twice their height. Not sure if that is rihgt tho. My Ds fell out of his high cahir once onto a tiled floor. We rang NHS direct and they sent an ambulance. When the paramedics arrived Ds was happily playing, they looked at us like we were mad and went away again.
What did she fall on? From how high? How hard (running etc)? How long ago?

DelGirl · 10/11/2006 20:17

Yes MM thats what I thought. She's always doing it, usually at the nursery. missus nosy bomb around girl that she is. Well she's singing now so I guess she's ok. She really cried after and held her head and she only does that if it really hurts.

If she's playing happily for the minute I'd leave her awake for a little longer. Then when she does go down just do what bizzi has said a bit later.

bizzi · 10/11/2006 20:18

dd1 fell from my waist height at 6 mnths and had enormous swelling around the back of her head/top of her neck. GP wasn't concerned at all!! No x-rays or any hospital checks. Just given the head injury mantra - sickness and drowsiness are early warnings for damage. She's now 9 and got a very high iq apparently!
I'm sure yours will be fine, they're robust creatures.

DelGirl · 10/11/2006 20:19

Tinker , she fell against her bedroom door from standing (or running more like). She's 18mths so not far to fall.

FWIw my ds when he was about 18 mths caught an orange sized bump on his forehead
I did the rational thing and flew him into A+E who told me
The forehead is the thickest bit of skull, therefore the "best" "safest" place to bump
am still that your dd is 18 mths old already
When how did that happen?

Kittypickle · 10/11/2006 20:24

It is typical that they do it at bedtime isn't it ! Glad she sounds OK, I hate it when they hit their heads, DS has mastered that skill just perfectly bless him !

daisy1999 · 10/11/2006 20:24

as long as she hasn't been sick or lost consciousness I would let her sleep and wake her in a couple of hours to check she's ok. I was once told not to give them calpol or any other painkiller after a bump on the head as it can mask any symptoms. My dd had the same injury at the same age by falling into the corner of a door, it looked awful but she was fine.

DelGirl · 10/11/2006 20:25

nearly 19 months piffle gawd knows the the times gone. How are you btw? Did I read you had your appendix out?

Had better go it sounds like dd is knocking down walls . Do you think she's ok?????

OP posts:
DelGirl · 10/11/2006 20:26

thanks daisy. She's on long term AB's for kidney reflux. Useful advice about the calpol though, I didn't know that. Thanks
