Is this normal? (TMI poo related)

I'm not sure whether to go to the doctor about this or whether it's completely normal. There is a lot of poo information on this post so don't read on if you're eating!

Since being diagnosed with coeliac disease five years ago I've had varying poos. By which I mean sometimes I'll do a normal sausage type poo but other times I'll go to the toilet and end up sitting there for about 20 mins doing lots of quite loose poos. The feeling in my stomach is as though I have diarrhoea but the poo isn't as runny as diarrhoea. So I'll do one poo, get ready to stand up and then get the urge to do another, and this carries on for up to 20 mins and the toilet is completely full up with poo.

This type of poo is happening probably every two/three days and often if I've eaten a lot the night before. I definitely haven't eaten any gluten.

I'm not (yet) diagnosed coeliac, but definitely have issues with gluten so have followed GF diet for over 18 months. having endoscopy this Autumn because I want to Know.

What you describe is a glutening symptom (sometimes) for me. They're different every time, but I'm beginning to detect a pattern when it happens. The last time was when my hubby fed me gluten containing sausages by mistake, the butchers had changed the recipe. I used to get it pretty much every day and it would make me late for work before I started a GF diet. Maybe cross contamination taking place somewhere? That damn stuff gets everywhere! also, could you be lactose intolerant, the two often go together.

Some coeliacs are also lactose intolerant to boot, do these episodes happen after you've had lactose? Could try cutting lactose out for a while. Often just after diagnosis coeliacs have transient lactose intolerance and after a few months of being lactose free as well as gluten free, symptoms begin to improve. Just a suggestion. Hope you're feeling better soon

I didn't explain that properly sorry. I mean to say that the lactose intolerance will improve after a little while of cutting it out. I have a lot of coeliac experience and poo is a strange interest of mine!

Thanks both. I've not been noting what I'd eaten before it happens so I'm not sure if I'd had lactose. I'll keep an eye on that, although I'm vegetarian as well as coeliac so being lactose intolerant too would be a bit of a nightmare!

PoshPenny I thought I could have accidentally eaten gluten but I really don't think I have, I'm very strict about it, separate toasters, check all ready made sauces, etc.

It's so annoying when they change recipes of things isn't it? I'd found some veggie sausages that were gluten free and now they've started using wheat flour in them.Angry

A lot of people with coeliac have trouble with corn too? I do. Maybe worth keeping an eye on in case that is relevant but might not apply!
