Do Welsh people have more autoimmune diseases? DH thinks they do.

Welsh Mumsnetters, please help us out with an entirely scientific enquiry into the health of the Welsh people.

DH is entirely Welsh and I'm half Welsh, but neither of us has ever lived there. On my (South) Welsh side of the family, we have a long history of:

pernicious anaemia
lupus
vitiligo
hypothyroidism

On his (North) Welsh side, they have:

lupus
primary biliary cirrhosis
childhood purpura

All of these are either definitely or putatively linked to autoimmune causes, and DH is convinced that what he calls 'Welsh in-breeding' Hmm is responsible for an increased prevalence of such disorders in our families. We're not from anywhere near each other within Wales so it's not shared family history.

We would be interested to hear your anecdotal evidence! DH is more convinced of his theory than I am, let the record show.

Hi. Am Welsh as is DH. Neither side has any of the above but several of my (Welsh) friends have lupus (2 generations) and lots of hypothyroidism. Not sure about the inbreeding theory though!

Lolimax · 15/05/2015 17:35

Oh and Valleys South Wales.

Hockneypool · 15/05/2015 17:56

We're not Welsh but we have
Lupus
Rumertoid (sp?) arthritis
Something else autoimmune, very rare but forgotten the name
We don 't yet know how it will be next generation yet.

Interesting!

I'm looking at my sons with a worried eye; I don't want them to get saddled with something X-linked :(

I have two South Welsh valleys friends from my year at school with Crohns, does that count?

Wasn't there some research published recently that showed that north and South Wales people don't share the same genetic heritage? I'll try and find it.

Panga63 · 15/05/2015 18:52

Cancer (2 siblings and paternal cousin) and vasculitis. Cancers tested for genetic link but none found :(

BringBackCabinPressure · 15/05/2015 19:09

My welsh side of the family (and myself) have vitiligo. I was told it's common amongst the Welsh...

Namehanger · 15/05/2015 19:13

Born in Wales, but not Welsh - Scottish. Do have MS though.

Lolimax · 15/05/2015 19:28

Just thinking though....us Welsh (especially of the Valleys/south variety) are a nosey friendly bunch and know a lot more about each other's lives than other areas. So is it than some conditions are more prevalent or do we just know too much?

mojo17 · 15/05/2015 19:33

Wtf
Hahaha
I've never heard of us Welsh being more prone to any medical issues apart from when mining was still a stronghold and all that went with that.
Will be interesting to see what others say though
