My Brother's inhalor has run out and he is very wheezy and coughing.
I can't get my inhalor to him and can't think of anyone who can. He doesn't want to get an ambulance unless gets desperate.
Is there anything that can help?
I thought paper bag-He hasn't got one.
Going out in fresh air-He said makes him cough more.

Tell him to breath slowly in through his mouth and slowly out through his nose. Make sure he takes deep breathes and slows his breathing down. hth

BIGlilBUBU · 08/11/2006 22:53

Try counting to 8 when breathing in and counting to 8 when breathing out.

LaDiDaDi · 08/11/2006 22:53

Hospital. Sorry to be blunt but I really think it would be the best thing.

Paper bags are the worst thing an asthmatic can use, that is for people who are hyperventilating, can you call the hospital for him and see what they say, I expect they will want hi in asap.

tortoise · 08/11/2006 22:57

Calif I had forgotten that,I did try to tell him hospital was best option.
Maybe this will be the kick up the butt he needs to quit smoking.

Hospital definitely. If he doesn't feel right about getting an ambulance then get a taxi.

Aero · 08/11/2006 22:59

How urgent is it for him - having watched my sister suffer a severe attack to the point at which I've seldom felt more helpless and panicky, the ambulance couldn't have come quick enough. Is he likely to deteriorate like that? If so then ambulance would me my advice.

tortoise · 08/11/2006 22:59

He has no money for a taxi. I will have to phone him again and tell him hospital is the best option before it gets too bad.

Aero I'm not sure.He was able to speak on the phone but felt it was getting worse. I don't want him to leave it until he gets worse.

Tell him to get a kitchen chair and sit on it backwards with his chest facing towards the back. He should put his arms rights up over the top so his armpits are tightly braced over the top of the chair back. This stretches the lungs and will give him a little more 'space' to breath.

3littlefrogs · 08/11/2006 23:02

Ambulance, hospital ,now - it is just not worth the risk of it getting worse with no inhaler in the house.

plibble · 08/11/2006 23:04

If he's near a hospital then he could call a cab, but he does need to go to get more medication. If he's not near, he should call an ambulance. Fresh air/bags etc won't help - asthma causes probs breathing out (and I underastand that it is breathing out that triggers the lungs to breathe in). He does need to try to relax so should get into whatever position helps with that (kind of like giving birth). Let us know how he gets on.

3littlefrogs · 08/11/2006 23:04

Is he on his own? If so i would call an ambulance for him - if he deteriorates he won't be able to call. I am very laid back about most things - never go to GP or hospital if I can avoid it, but asthma is serious and is one of the conditions i would summon help for.

Aero · 08/11/2006 23:05

If he feel's he's getting worse, then he probably needs to be nebulised. Can you call an ambulance for him and just let him know you've done it and not to be so stubborn - asthma is actually a life or death condition, so he's no need to feel guilty about it!

tortoise · 08/11/2006 23:07

He is with his girlfriend. I will have to get him to give me his address before i can phone ambulance!
Going to phone him now. Will get his girlfriend to make him see sence!
