how the heck can I cut DD's toe nails??

20 month old DD badly needs her toe nails cut - some of them are curling over her toes!
She will not let me do it when she's awake, yanks her feet away and daft though it sounds even DH and I between us can't hold her and her feet still to get the clippers on them.
So we thought, no problem, we'll just do it when she's asleep. Well, we've just spent 10 minutes in her room trying but she is squirming and pulling away too much.

Any tips please?

do it while she is drinking he milk?

operation pin down - requires two - one for holding, one to clip

asleep - but one nail at a time!

bit young for bribery....

pop favourite tv programme on and do it while she is absorbed in it

get grannie to do it!

Have you tried straight after a bath when the nails are soft?

What about Podiatry referral?

Sorry I'm not much help

CountTo10 · 08/11/2006 21:57

We had this issue, and we did have to perservere with the pinning down I'm afraid!! We did get to a point where once ds was sat with his night time milk, we could then gently do it whilst the other distracted.

I used to have to pin DD1 down - sort of clamp her between my knees - and just do my best whilst trying to keep her as still as possible. She's fine at having them done now though so obviously it wasn't too traumatic!

biglips · 08/11/2006 22:01

what about when she is asleep?

loler · 08/11/2006 22:07

I've got some problem but my DD is 3.5!

I sit on her while DH cuts them - so traumatic for everyone involved that only gets done about twice a year!

We've tried everything from threats to bribes and not found anything that works. Have decided that she's just got very tickly feet and that's why she hates it so much.

Hoping she'll get over it when she can cut her own - any ideas how long that will be?

motherinferior · 08/11/2006 22:09

I used to do DD2's when she was asleep in her buggy.

motherinferior · 08/11/2006 22:09

Which meant I frequently leapt on her with the clippers in the middle of the street, of course.

ds1 hates having his toenails cut, I offer to paint them now and that sometimes works. It takes ages, as I have to do them one at a time - cut then paint, cut then paint,.

Clippers are not good really for tiny toes. I have a brilliant pair of very dainty (but strong) La Cross baby scissors I bought in NY and they are fab for everybody's nails - these look closest - it is much easier to get under fragile little nails with these without making them shriek too much .

the 'asleep' option hasn't worked. that's what we tried earlier on tonight. She's quite a heavy sleeper (I've done a nappy change and full PJs change before without her waking up) but her feet were just kicking out too much.

I shall try in the morning while she has her milk - thanks for that tip - and if that doesn't work then we'll have a whole family toe nail clipping session and she if she'll join in. What fun

And I mihgt see if I can get some little scissors tomorrow too (thanks janH)
