My dad has just been diagnosed with this, and to be honest it sounds very scary does anyone have any experience they could share?

I used to work on this topic. people with this condition can be very well controled on medication, though it can take a little while to get the right dose/ mix of medications.

One in 100 people will have a fit at some point in their life time, not all of these will have epilepsy but epilepsy isn't a rare condition. But most of us will never have seen somepne have a fir....this is because, on the whole they are so well controled.

Try not to worry too much (hard I know). Once they get your dad's med sorted he will live a virtually normal life......mnetters with eplipsy will be along soon, I'm sure

he will have to go a set time without a fit, I can't remember te legal minimum time. I will google for you.

In the short term he will definatly not be able to drive

just found this for you

'It is possible to apply or reapply for a category A, B, or P licence as long as you have:

been free from seizures completely for one year or
only experienced sleep seizures for a period of at least three years and
the DVLA/DVLNI is satisfied that as a driver you are not likely to be a source of danger to the public '

Hi pepperpots, my dh has temporal lobe epilepsy; it was diagnosed about 6 years ago.
Firstly have a look at Epilepsy Action as they have some great information on their website regarding the different types of epilepsy and its treatment.

In relation to driving I have to say that dh couldn't, legally, drive for a year after he was diagnosed. I believe you have to inform the DVLA and then you can drive-only if on medication-if you haven't fitted for one year. PLEASE check this though as we are talking about information that is six years old!
Dh is now on Tegretol Retard; two tablets once a day and hasn't fitted since taking them.

It is a scary time and I wish you all the best. Please let us know how you get on and ask any questions you need to, I'll try to answer xx

(sorry quick hijack)rabbitrabbit my dh has just started on Tegretol Retard I have notice he has been loads better since, Has your dh had any problems with them(just in case I should keep an eye out for anything)

Hi 2shoes, sorry-I've just seen this.
He's been fine since starting the tablets, no problems related to them at all. I think they need to go and have regular blood tests? Not for anything sinister, just to monitor them I think.
Is it temporal lobe he has or something else?
