If you got varifocals and didn't like them at first

Did it get better?
I'm 57 and for years have needed reading and distance glasses. I tried varifocals many years ago and couldn't get on with them. It was the reading part that I struggled with.
Anyway recently my eyes have got worse and I need intermediate as well. I decided to try again and went for the top of the range version at Specsavers.
I'm finding it hard. I feel as if I am really straining to see the page or iPad screen when reading.

I really wanted these to work.

I have varifocals - I started early because my mother had problems with them and never got on with them. I thought if I did it gradually, I would get used to them.

I have not had a real problem, but usually find it easier to see things close to if I look under them rather than through them.

My best glasses are my sunglasses with the cheapest varifocal lens. I think this is because they are big; they seem to be better if they are big.

I got 2nd top of range from specsavers 3 months ago and love them. Took me about 36 hours to get used to them. I've always been long sighted and wore glasses or contact lenses to correct that. Once I started to need reading glasses I couldn't get on with the constant changing so went for varifocals. On the other hand the contact lenses I trialled which were supposed to be varifocal I couldn't get on with at all.

I've had mine for two years. i have just had my reminder letter that I am due my eye test and I have decided to go for separate reading and distance glasses. I think my distance vision isn't as good with these as my old glasses and if I am trying to read really small writing, I have to take them off! I might go the whole hog and get a chain to put them on as well Grin

give it time, took me 3 weeks to get used to them !

CMOTDibbler · 12/05/2015 17:13

I'm only 42 Sad, and at first it felt like I was permanently wearing the wrong glasses, but after a few weeks its settled down. They recommended larger lenses as theres more room for the transition

GrassyBottom · 12/05/2015 17:46

Thanks all. They are reasonably large though not wayfarer.
I have always had loads of specs. A pair in every room, one in each car, a pair in my bag. Actually make that two pairs because of having reading and distance ones and sunglasses as well.

No problem with distance, although I dislike the fact that the periphery is blurred. It's when I am reading I feel as though I am trying to peer through a narrow hole. Also I can see much better with my reading glasses.
Oddly enough I got sunglasses as my second pair and have taken to them easily Confused

Must persevere.

I've had my present pair for about 18 months, I won't be buying another pair, I do better taking them off for close up stuff. I am short sighted. Of course that may be a terrible mistake, but they were soo expensive I am not sure they were worth the extra.

I went for top of the range from Boot's - with a 4 week return guarantee. I mainly needed them for reading, tho' was marginal for the reading the numberplate driving test.

I found them downright dangerous for long distance, especially crossing the road and driving. Felt as if I had no peripheral vision and had to turn my head instead of just flicking my eyes to right or left.

I couldn't read as quickly, either.

I tried them for 3 weeks and then took them back. They returned my money with no question. It's a pain having to have two pairs, but I just didn't feel safe.

I wear varifocals and it's the one thing in my life that I spend a lot of money on , buying top of the range ,
I never use Specsavers as being a concession their service varies hugely from shop to shop and I've heard of many unhappy customers .

I was told to " look down my nose " when I first started wearing varifocals and that did help me get used to them .

I read a lot in bed and my optician took a long time getting my prescription to allow me to do that comfortably .I definitely don't have a small window of vision for reading or any peripheral blurriness and think you need to go back and get that sorted - they can't have got this correct . Or you need higher quality lenses .

The one thing I struggle with is things like looking at paintings hung on walls and looking up at buildings as I have to tip my head back to get the right angle ,but I'm short ( 5' ) so suspect that's a factor .

I'd go back ,yours sound wrongly set up .
