Surgery for wrinkles, would you consider it? Should I, or does it make me shallow and vain?!

Today, as I sat looking at my reflection in the harsh daylight of my car rear view mirror (don't worry, I wasn't driving at the time), I noticed that my wrinkles have got worse. And I started thinking about doing something about it. Like Botox or something. And then I wondered whether:

A)Any cosmetic 'surgery' like this is justifiable in terms of expense/risk/pain just for the sake of vanity?

B) As a feminist could I live with myself if I went ahead? I've read and agreed with much of what Naomi Wolf had to say in The Beauty Myth and somewhere in me is a kernel of conscience asking why I feel the need to think about this? Is it because society demands that women look younger for longer? (I'm 35 and happily partnered)

Has anyone had surgery? What was it like? Is there something that doesn't involve having botulism injected into your forehead? Does Patsy Kensit (she's apparently a Botox fan) have any facial expressions? What about Restalyne? (sp?)

I do avoid the sun and wear factor 30 sunscreen, I am about to give up smoking, I do drink lots of water and eat healthily. But should I learn to love my wrinkles? Does anyone really? Would you all rush off and have your crows feet done if money were no object?

Any and all views welcome. And feel free to slag me off for being a vain bitch if you like (but I do realise that there are many more important issues in the world...still interested to know if other people feel like this!)

thanks, suew, for the tip. Hope the toothbrushing went OK.

salalex · 25/04/2002 15:21

SueW, What are you going to have done to your legs? Is it sclerotherapy or something? How much does it cost? Soory about barage of questions, but I'd like that done too. And I have a varicose vein on the back of one leg which is really hurting and makes me feel soooo old!! I'm only 37. Wrinkles not too bad, despite being a smoker for ages (just given up - again)but I have done the cleanse tone amd moisturise thing since I was about 15 so maybe that's why. being addicted to expensive cosmetics - to my Dh's chagrin - I'm now going to log on to dermalogica's website , to see if I can spend some more money! Anyone tried www.strawberrynet.com? Supposed to be a cheap place for creams etc.

Anyone see Christine Hamilton get minor cosmetic surgery on Gloria Hunniford yesterday?
I missed it but would like to hear how it went

Any tips on how to get rid of cellulite ?

Jasper · 26/04/2002 13:44

SueW I think she got something injected into the lines from her nose to the corner of her mouth and also something to plump up her top lip.
I saw your old flats on the Louis Theroux prog, am I right?

Maybe I'm not qualified to join in this discussion (at 21...) but I am completely anti the whole cosmetic surgery thing. I don't believe society should be able to dictate to us what we should look like. It's the old cliche - beauty comes from within. And I'd rather look at a natural face than one which has obviously been "modified!" I intend to age gracefully, wrinkles and all!

aloha · 28/04/2002 08:58

Ah, Jenny, that's just what I thought at 21! Nearly 20 years on, bring on the Botox! (unomodified faces are lovely,so long as they're not yours...)

Don't know about the Joey product specifically, but find the other cosmetic products that promise larger lips don't have much effect -certainly not more than a good gloopy lipgloss would give. But definitely wouldn't have a lip job - incredibly painful, I understand, with high risk of coldsores etc, plus you look like you've been slapped in the mouth.

If anyone saw Pete Burns (from 80's band Dead or Alive) last week on Never Mind the Buzzcocks, I'm sure they would have a few concerns about plastic surgery.

MalmoMum · 19/05/2002 21:56

Is that who/what it was. I turned on half way through and I knew I had missed Something. Scary. Very scary.

honeybunny · 20/05/2002 06:33

I did see it, Enid, truely scarey stuff. I watched fascinated for a good 10 minutes, listening to him bitch with Mark Lamar, v entertaining. Wonder if he's happy with the result?!!
