You can some ear drops in the chemist. Ortex is one we've used - it's brilliant. Or like you said olive oil - a dropper is the easiest way and before bed best time to use as if you're lying down it won't trickle out so much.

SanityClause · 09/05/2015 09:20

Do you have any kind of dropper?

Can someone help? If so, they could run some down a small spoon handle into your ear.

Or get a cotton bud absolutely saturated, and dripping, and drop it in, drop by drop, with that? (To be clear, not pushing it in, just letting the oil drop in.)

I have an olive oil spray, called Earol. It's very good, and gets the oil where it is needed, but obviously that's not an immediate solution to your problem.

VeryVeryDarkGrey · 09/05/2015 09:21

You can dribble it in with the handle of a tea spoon if you havent got a dropper. Last time my ears were blocked the nurse said not to bother buying any ear drops, she said to just use olive oil. Warm it up a bit first

Suddengeekgirl · 09/05/2015 09:22

I've used the kids calpol injector/ measuring thingy to put oil in my ear before.

chocolatelife · 09/05/2015 09:38

thanks for your responses
it has been blocked for a week since going swimming.

so once you put the drops in you tilt your head to make it run down? and do it at night and put cotton wool in to soak up anything?

I just pour oil in and seal it up with cotton wool overnight. Hope it does the trick, but you may need to have it syringed if it persists.

OneDayWhenIGrowUp · 09/05/2015 09:42

I'm interested to know what they suggested you do with a hairdryer!!?!

Otex is brilliant. It fizzes a little and melts the wax - I lie on one side with the offending ear upmost, drop a generous amount of drop in, listen to it fizzle away for a few minutes then turn my head over to let it run out- have a tissue handy- it's yucky. Might need a few repeat goes (not all at the same time!) if you've got a proper plug of wax blocking it.

chocolatelife · 09/05/2015 10:01

the clinical person said he looked on the computer and that was suggested,
as well as salted water or olive oil

I'm a bit Hmm at hairdyer too. Perhaps the hot air will disperse the wax or something(grasps straws)..

chocolatelife · 09/05/2015 12:19

well I imagine it is in an attempt to try the water in my ear.

You need to melt or soften the wax. Don't put cottons wool in your ear as the fibres can clog it up. Olive oil drops 2ce a day and rest head on a tilt so you can keep it I there. Wipe excess away with a tissue. Alternatively hot hot hot bath (as long as you're not preg) and submerge head for as long as possible to melt it.

Or just book in at the surgery to get ears syringed!!

chocolatelife · 09/05/2015 12:29

oh thank you, currently sitting here with cotton wool in my ear.
now removed
i seem to recall i had a blocked ear before and somehow cured it in the bath.

so the water is stuck behind the wax?

Get some sodium bicarbonate ear drops from the chemist. That helped to loosen my earwax much better than olive oil. And then it is supposed to just run out when you have a shower and wash your hair. But I had them syringed as well as I wanted to make sure they were unblocked.

PuppyMonkey · 09/05/2015 12:50

You can buy olive oil in a bottle with a pipette from Boots especially for this purpose. Smile

Pharmacist told me not to bother with Otex, it's olive oil you need and if it's blocked with wax you'll need it syringed by the nurse at your local practice. They make you do the olive oil thing for 2 weeks before you go for the syringe.

chocolatelife · 09/05/2015 21:14

pharmacist did suggest jump on the other foot holding my affected ear Blush but she was quite embarrassed at this suggestion and in the end sold me some urea hydrogen peroxide.- gosh I could have weed in my ear !

If it's wax the doctor will tell you to use olive oil for at least a week before they syringe. I too used the injector thing that came with the kids calpol/ibuprofen.

As an aside, funny how olive oil has moved from the medicine cabinet to the kitchen, when I was a kid we had a little bottle in bathroom cabinet for blocked ears, it was never used for cooking in the 70s!
