Wisdom tooth question

Hi all,
Firstly I know nothing about wisdom teeth, maybe someone does.I have just one lower wisdom tooth coming up for past year or so.For past week, it is quite sore around it but I am more bothered with glands swollen underneath it and neck sore on that side .I was with my lovely dentist last month and she said it is just growing. My q is: should I really be putting up with pain in ear, glands swelling -Iis this part of it and the norm?? I have it a week now on and off throughout the day. Thanks in advance .I am a bad patient anyway Sad

I put up with an impacted wisdom tooth doing exactly the same for about 3 years. I never had a bad infection in it, just lots of little flare ups, so thought that I could just put up with it.

I finally had it out last week and, although it has been pretty tough (mine had a lot of complications), I'm glad it's finally out.

I do have private dental cover, so not sure what they would recommend on the NHS.

I'd keep track of the flare ups and pain. If you are having to often take painkillers for it etc, I would go back and let her know to see about having it out.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply.I hope you are doing well and on the mend.Yes I see too see someone privately .I just feel I am distracted today at work with this and have no energy from it this week. There was no mention of it being impacted and it's just flat like a fried egg shape on gum but gum around it swollen. Its got to be this as no pain on other side of neck ! I keep telling myself give it another day and see how it goes but maybe I should ring her.I hate being a nuisance .Glad things worked out for you Smile

How old are you?

Have you had antibiotics for it? The NICE guidelines are fairly strict about who can get them removed. Two episodes of infection requiring antibiotics within 12 months...

seoda24 · 07/05/2015 21:49

I am 35 Mrsm. No, I have never taken antibiotics for them. This is the only wisdom tooth I have and its small and flat coming up.I don't know if it requires removal and would certainly prefer not to.I feel as if I have the mumps tonight from soreness under ears .I am hoping it will go away but today was a bad day. There is no obvious signs of infection based on what I can see but I really know nothing about these things apart from getting worried after a week of this.I take daily antihistamines for severe allergies and thought these may help swelling but no.Thank you I appreciate your reply

If you were my patient, I'd get an x Ray to check for chronic infection and chances of proper eruption. Then we could discuss options.

It's important to see your dentist each time you have problems so that the nice guidelines can be met if they need extracting.

Oh you sound so nice and efficient but I must say the same about my own dentist who is so patient. An X-ray was not mentioned the last day just that it is growing.I will put up with off and on discomfort if it's the norm but today was testing.I just hate moaning as I am not a good dental patient through fear.I will see how tomorrow goes and make a move next week if no change. Many thanks for taking the time to reply

I'd say I'm efficient but not terribly nice. (I'm leaving clinical dentistry at the end of the year, thank the gods)

Are you using hot salt mouthwash etc?

5446 · 07/05/2015 23:13

Sorry to derail, but MrsMorton, do you have any idea how long the stitches will stay in for?

Supposed to be dissolvable but have been in there firmly for over a week. Cheek has also been sewn up so can't smile properly! He says he has put over six in, thought one would have shifted by now.

seoda24 · 08/05/2015 00:14

The salt water mix brings yes I have been trying.best of luck Mrsm I'm sure you will be a miss in that area.Oh 5446 that sounds so awful... Let's hope I am not heading in that direction and joining that queue next as I'm the worlds worst for squeamish blood related things but I hope you are feeling well.thanks

Ten days plus. If they're tight you could get them taken out? Annoying!!!

seoda24 · 08/05/2015 11:25

Okay , I need to get it checked asap.Pain under ear worse today, even sore when walking.Maybe this is normal for a growing tooth, I'm not sure so I'm off to pick up phone Sad

Now I know more tonight so just a little update.Today I found out I have pericoronitis and my wisdom tooth that I "thought " was starting to grow has however grown at a horizontal angle .Theres only a small bit exposed.
I was so amazed at x-Ray ( I never saw a photo of such a strange looking toot or never knew they could grow like this) .Hence the awful pain all week.Glad I went. Now I am resting and taking antibiotics, pain killers, rinsing.Am noticing an improvement in pain. What the future holds in this area.... I DREAD to think, let's hope it's a once off infection and not the start. Thanks for the WISDOM chat guys
