nightmare dental scenario

I have a failed root canal that was never done properly, so was failed from get go. As Dentist was sure was sound I then had years of pain/investigations for various sinus problems.

Eventually got new dentist who felt was failed, referred me to Consultant Endo at Eastman who confirmed definitely failed plus decay and cracks in other teeth (I clench and wear splint at night).

In the meanwhile I developed an ulcer from all the ibuprofen, and still in pain. Saw new dentist today as have v painful access and he's recommending me for extraction under sedation on NHS but likely to take month+ just to be triaged. Need sedation as am anxious plus it's likely to break and need cut. He's recommended I pay for private sedation and extraction but doesn't do it, and then told me I'll need to find a new dentist as he's not taking on NHS any more.

So, how do I find a dentist that offers sedation? Am I a candidate for a dental plan, or is what I am likely to need not covered? And any tips on pain relief, am on solpadeine Max every 4 hours and have antibxbut have just had enough

Thanks

You poor thing!

Can you pay for private or is that not an option?

somuchforthecity · 06/05/2015 22:09

I had a referral for dental sedation - I had to pay £30 for the referral letter to an NHS place that offered sedation but then it was free.

In the end I had it done at hospital as it was more complicated than they thought and they were find with me being sedated. Is there any way you could get referred to hospital?

Thanks but I have been referred to the hospital but the referral will take at least a month and then that's just for me to be triaged and then I'll have to wait for again for the actual appt - I just cannot wait that long seeing as it hurts to even blink on that side. My daughter needs 4 teeth out and was seen and put on the list in Jan - she also has an abscess - and it's now May and we are still waiting for an appt for her - so I have little hope in the NHS sorting this quickly.

Anyone know if I could just find some Big Girl pants somewhere and get it done with valium and local? I've been told so many different things by different people I don't know what way is up anymore - and have no dentist to ask.

And yes - my mum will lend me the money thankfully but I just don't know where to start in private system - and am frightened they will 'find' lots of other things that need doing too that cost more than I can afford

Would it be worth going to an emergency dentist saying you can't cope with the pain and see if they can fast-track you?

Madamecastafiore · 07/05/2015 08:16

Where are you?

I have a fantastic private dentist in North essex (on way to see him this morning). The NHS dentist had fit me crowns which really didn't fit and were diseased underneath. I was in an awful state with constant infections and bad breath. Walked into see my dentist now and although it has cost, it has actually been painless and bloody life changing.

I had something similar last year. Went to a local private hospital and saw a consultant dentist, took two days from ringing to get the appointment. Tooth was removed under general anaesthetic less than a week later. Cost was around 2k. Horrendous amount to pay, but like you I was in constant pain, unable to go to work, eat or sleep and my dentist couldn't even get me an appointment date. Best money I've ever spent.

Thank you for the hope. Im Surrey/Kent borders so N Essex a bit far to travel - but I've got a good local private hospital near me (had an op there on NHS and was wonderful - got a menu to choose mypost op meal - smoked salmon sarnies don't mind if I do!) - so may ask there if they cover dentistry. Else I think I'll just bite the bullet and find a private dentist that is recommended as presumably they would know who I should see and could refer me if needed.

Thanks
