is this normal for a sprained ankle?

Everyone in RL is fed up with me asking, so I'm trying MN as Dr Google isn't helping :( (disclaimer, I have had real actual medical advice)

OK, sprained my ankle 4 weeks ago, it swelled up and bruised as I'd expect. A week later it was still sore, and very tender on the ankle bone, so I went off to minor injuries who said they didn't think it was broken, but to be on the safe side, go for an x-ray. X-ray said no break, hospital said rest, compression, drive when you feel up to it.

Since then swelling has gone down, bruising has gone, but it's very achey all round the ankle and up my calf. Still sore on the ankle bone, and it's difficult to walk down the stairs (up stairs and on the flat is OK walking). I'm taking paracetamol regularly, but i can still feel the ache.

Dr Google suggests it might have been a high ankle sprain, but the majority of help stuff for that seems to be American, and talks about immobilising the ankle straightaway and having specialist physio input (which having experienced NHS physio made me snort a bit - DD was initially refused physio despite being on crutches with a sprained hip as they refused to see her in person to assess, and did the "computer says no").

Anyway finishes rant, should it still hurt 4 weeks later with no break showing after a week, and should it be hurting where it is? I'm thinking about going to a different minor injuries who do have an x ray department to save time if another xray is needed, but am I just being too optimistic about how quickly I should be better?

It may be that you pulled the tendons as well which take longer to heal. But not to alarm you, my cousin had her foot xrayed after she hurt it and got the all clear but 3 weeks later after an audit they noticed a small bone had broken. I'd see your GP and if he or she was concerned they would ask for another xray x

Yes it is normal , it can take a couple of months ime. A physio is great for advice on exercises to gradually build up the strength and also deep massage. You may well have torn ligaments away from the bone or overstretched them and they take time to heal.

thanks, looks like i'm being a bit over-keen for it to be better. I'll leave it another couple of weeks then, and see how it goes. I was thinking maybe damage to tendons, but NHS advice on that is a bit sparse. And I'd rather not pay for physio unless I really have to, £60 a visit adds up Sad.

Mine didn't cost anywhere near that. Assessment was about £35 and sessions less than that , but fortunately covered by insurance. Physio at local sports centre.
