Manky toe injury from running (not sure if this needs a klaxon?)

DD ran the London marathon last weekend and is now gifted with a throbbing, swollen, yellow second toe which is a bit oozy when she knocks it. She can't walk comfortably so how do we treat it? I am guessing there is some kind of infection going on underneath the toenail that looks like it might detach at some point in the next few weeks.

congrats to your DD first of all - did she enjoy it?

then get her to a GP to check for any infection that may need antibiotics - but soaking the foot in hot salted water will help clean it out

i'm going to lose a toenail too, but so far it's only black under the nail bed, and peeling soft skin around the tip

She needs to show this to GP Practice Nurse or minor injury unit. If infected she will need an antibiotic. In the meantime she could wash foot in warm salt water, or mild soap and water and apply a non adhesive dressing.
Congratulations on London Marathon!

She's doing the warm salty footbath as we speak (she is really hoping to avoid antibiotics as she takes them prophylacticly for her asthma and she has just finished a course for a chest infection she picked up just before the marathon). I can't see her nailbed just a yellow mess above it.

She had a really good run especially as she was hit by asthma/chest infection on the Wednesday before the run.

yellow mess leaking out is good though, soaking it should help draw the rest out. i wold cover it, but very loosely with some gauze or even some too-wide tubigrip if you have any

i'm still in shock i did sunday, it was such an awesome day!

It was a great day wasn't it? I salute every single runner who took part, I couldn't run for a bus much less do the marathon (although I have done a Moonwalk). I will sort her out some gauze and hope that frequent soaking works its magic for her.
