Recently I went to have a routine smear test. The nurse doing the exam said that I had Cervical Polyps, and should see a Doctor. Have been to see the Doctor who has recommended that I have them removed.
Has anyone ever had this?
Am also worried about the outcome.

I've posted today re: having uterine polyp removed - I'm going in on Fri and it will be day surgery about half an hour - should get home that evening.

There's loads of stuff on the internet about polyps - they are a benign tumour, so would be sent for histiological examinantion but 99.9% cause no problem whatsoever other than the fact that if you're prone to them you may grow some more.

I'll copy you if anyone posts on my thread, but I'm pretty sure there's nothing to worry about apart from very minor op

Thanks for your response fortyplus. Let me know how you get on.

Hi - I hadn't had any replies to my thread so I duplicated it so that it would appear on the 'unanswered' list.

I've had a couple of replies if you care to take a look - both very reassuring.

Hi,
Try not to worry about this. These are very common and more often than not totally benign. Sometimes the GP can just twist them off other times they need to be removed at hospital.
They are usually sent of ,as a routine measure, to be checked over.
I can't stress how common these are and are no different to polyps in your nose for example!

Thanks, LaylaandSethsmum, I've promised worry that i'll also let her know how I get on on Fri - thought I might jog home as I'm not allowed to drive!

worryismymiddlename - I've had a couple of other responses on my thread - have you seen?

Spoke to the hospital this morning - they've told me that my surgery is scheduled for between 2 & 4pm tomorrow so they think I should be ok to go home by 7.30 that evening.

So not even an overnight stay! Can't be bad - I'd much rather sleep in my own bed.

Hi

I've had two cervical polyps in the past. The removal procedure was very quick and painless - it was all over in less than 15 minutes. I didn't require any sedation or anaesthetic, though I believe its available if you want it. Both mine were found to be benign, which as other posters have mentioned is the case the great majority of the time. They mentioned that I might have a little bleeding or discharge afterward but I didn't experience this. I found taking staphisagria homeopathic remedy comforting afterward (if you're into that sort of thing).

Thanks Marymillington and LaylaandSethsmum,
It's good to hear from someone who has actually had these removed to 'speak' to. Also to hear a little about the proceedure.
Tell me do they use the same instruments they use for taking a smear.
Also would you need stitches?
Is it OK to take someone in with you (to hold hands, give moral support)?

they use a speculum, and i have to confess that i didn't look at anything else....but they just snipped it off in two secs, didn't feel anything. no need for stitches or anything. i didn't have anyone with me but am sure lots of people do; a motherly older nurse lady started talking to me about the weather and my holidays at a strategic moment. i am a total wimp about such things but it was really no biggie, am sure it will be fine for you too.

worryismymiddlename · 09/11/2006 16:20

Thanks Mary, making me feel better already.
Will ask if I can bring someone along, the worst they can say is 'no'.

Will they sort it out there and then or will I have to go back?
