Quick question re. booking a smear test at GP's

Snowstorm · 29/04/2015 10:48

I've had my postal reminder and just booked my appointment with my GP on-line. Does the doctor need to be pre-warned it's for a smear test or do I just pitch up for my appointment as usual?

TIA

The GP won't do it. It is a nurse thing and yes, depending on your surgery, it is usually best to let them know it is for a smear, as some surgeries have soecific clinics/ times and days for this procedure

That should say specific!

They need the equipment (and forms) ready and may need more time than the usual consultation allowance.

At my surgery you book a smear with the nurses. They recommend you try for a specific time during your cycle, so I've always phoned and advised the receptionist what the appointment is for and when abouts I need it doing. They're always very accommodating, but my surgery is a good one.

Where I work, unless the patient has difficulties with smears, it is done by a practice nurse in a twenty minute appt (opposed to the standard 10). I would phone your surgery and see what they say.

Oh yes, i forgot about the extra appointment time. Cancel GP appointment and speak to receptionist about when best to come in

SpottyTeacakes · 29/04/2015 11:12

Yes and it can't be done on a Friday afternoon Smile

Snowstorm · 29/04/2015 11:12

Okay, thank you, I'll give them a call.

Good thing I checked with you - you're right, it's the practice nurse that does the smears. That's all sorted then. Thank you!
