250 mg Amoxicillan prescribed

but I have an unopened packet of Amoxicillin 500 mg

to save on the prescription costs, can I use this double dose? It was for nasty wound infection but now I ahve a tooth abscess.
seems a shame not to

Your not you're

NoArmaniNoPunani · 29/04/2015 07:40

My advice was also the correct guidelines, I was just trying to clarify why your dentist has gone against them. I didn't imply your dentist wasn't qualified.

Nevermind I'll certainly think twice about helping someone with an abscess on here again.

Ps mrs Morton, I'm pregnant!

TantrumsAndBalloons · 29/04/2015 07:40

caravan I think the point is that the OP already has been prescribed the antibiotics by s dentist. She just wants to know whether she can use the stronger dose that she has at home, not a debate about whether she needs them at all.

Mrsmorton · 29/04/2015 07:44

armani I saw that on another thread!! Congratulations!!! Grin

chocolatelife · 29/04/2015 07:58

thanks tantrums

nobody actually knows who is who here and nobody fronted up with the info, "I am a dentist"

anyway, i am not here for an argument Sad just antibiotic query.

It has not worked anyway,
now on Metronidazole as well and no treatment is forthcoming, until the swelling goes down. Sad

chocolatelife I hope you feel better soon Flowers

Recently I had pulpitis (I think thats the word) and had amoxicillin then metronidazole because the infection wasn't getting better.

I had root canal, and it really was nowhere near as bad as the shock-horror response people always give to it.More like a weird filling that took ages.
Give it some consideration, perhaps, rather than lose the tooth.

Mrsmorton · 30/04/2015 16:13

Antibiotics don't treat pulpitis. That's like drinking tea to fix an I growing toenail. I wish the NHS would get a grip of dentists who prescribe inappropriately, it's so unfair.

ThatBloodyWoman · 30/04/2015 16:22

Well, maybe I've got that wrong then Mrsmorton and perhaps it wasn't pulpitis I had the antibiotics for.
I haven't heard of anyone with an infection in their mouth or abcess not getting antibiotics ( -I understand the reasoning if it is because of antibiotic resistance, and the real treatment is removing the reason for the infection)but it seems the patient is given antibiotics in many cases, and since all we can do is trust that our dentist is doing best by us,we take them.
I certainly did.

chocolatelife · 30/04/2015 16:24

thanks Thanks
Thatbloodywoman,
thing is I cannot bear to have my mouth open and filled with instruments and had a root canal 20 years ago which put the fear of god dentists into me.
I had this root canal removed a couple of years ago and it wasnt such a bad experience.
But I cannot go through another root canal, i gag, or feel like it.
Dentist insistent on antibiotics doing their job, soon, in the meantime I suffer Sad, but fingers crossed it will be sorted soon.
I did wonder whetehr the antibiotics might have lost their effectiveness being stored in my kitchen, but dont know who to ask. Dare not admit to dentist what I did Blush

OP, you titled your post asking for dentists and two people have claimed to be and given advice.

I appreciate you've got raging toothache and are in a lot of pain, but I think you could have been more appreciative of the advice and less snarky.

I hope you feel better soon.

Congrats Armani

chocolatelife · 30/04/2015 16:51

i did think about arguing with dentist and telling her what someone on the internet told me, but she would have raised her eyes at me probably

On a lighter note, why would anyone pretend to be a dentist when it's such a hated profession? If I was going to have a fake profession I'd be a flight attendant or something.

Thanks for the congrats hermione, looking in mouths with that increased sense of smell is interesting!

Mrsmorton · 30/04/2015 18:50

God, I pretend not to be a dentist when people ask what I do.

Reading a thread on a dentist only forum
Reveals most dentists would strongly discourage their children from entering the profession.

Armani, my nurse had to go on reception only duties because of the smells!!
