Is smoking tea dangerous?

BIL has mental health issues and this is his latest bizarre idea, indulged completely by MIL.

I think it can't be good for you, but am prepared to be told I'm wrong.

Huh?

Why doesn't he smoke cannabis?

My ex has been dealing w/clincial depression for years. His psychiatrist tells him a little cannabis doesn't hurt, especially when he's between meds - he sometimes has to change meds, and come off one first - and gets wretched insomnia.

Of course, in the US, it's weed as opposed to hash.

Cannabis can have some side effects which might not be terribly useful if you are in a fragile state mentally. eg it can make you very paranoid, which if that is one of the symptoms of your illness anyway sure ain't going to help much. I can see it might be helpful if you are suffering from insomnia or say, having problems eating!
But It can also trigger psychotic episodes (though this is more common among younger people).

I think he is smoking tea hoping it will be like cheap dope (probably seen that website Franny linked to). He is Bi-polar fullmoon.

I think the "giving up" is a cost thing he is on benefits.

ok, so in terms of wild ideas which a bi-polar person might have, I'd say smoking tea is probably relatively harmless.

Am very much loving 'Mary Jane and Camellia will never wear the same dress to the prom'.

threebob · 05/11/2006 18:27

Yes, but it's a flag that he's not doing as well as he could, and will bein hospital soon. Why is there only me can see this?

I mean as opposed to his family - not meaning you should fullmoon.

I have experience of what sounds like a very similar situation on my ILs side, threebob. After years and years and years, it is patently clear that it is impossible to get MIL to act sensibly and objectively when it comes to her dd. It hasn't mattered a jot how much professional advice has been given wither. In fact, by trying to soak up all dd's woes and trying to run her life for her, MIl is part of the problem.

I would say don't even bother trying to get your mIL to see your point of view. Mother love can be very strange and sometimes destructive.

She was super bitchy to me yesterday, I think I just need to say nothing when confronted with one of BIL schemes.

She is now witholding a regular babysitting arrangement (whilst I work) just to be awkward - so grandson love is obviously no competition at all.

threebob, it's ok, I knew what you meant....
You're in a difficult situation I feel; not close enough to get involved but close enough to see what is happening and be worried.
Does he have a care plan? And a care-coordinator? They are meant to have regular reviews and chances are someone 'professional' may already have spotted some warning signs?
Are you close enough to him to ask him how he is feeling at the moment? Just to see if he mentioned anything unusual, a change in meds or a cycular pattern emerging?

WethreebobKings · 03/12/2006 17:42

Just an update;

As predicted by me, he is now in hospital.

santacutie · 03/12/2006 17:51

we used to roll up tea leaves in huge paper spliffs and smoke them as kids...we also lit the ends of Twiglets and smoked those

aDadOnTheXmasSherry · 03/12/2006 17:53

sorry to hear that threebob.

I hope his situation looks up soon.

zippitippitoes · 03/12/2006 17:58

you must have been cleverer than us we just used to roll up paper..soon flares up near your face

Hope your BIL gets sorted soon
