DP (47)going for endoscopy

I am so worried. For the past 2 weeks he has had indigestion, burping, abdo pain and sometimes difficulty swallowing.

The GP initially thought it was gallbladder but all the blood tests came back normal (blood count, inflammation markers, etc etc)

She has now said he needs to have an endoscopy in the next 2 weeks.

I am worried shitless that it is stomach cancer as is he. His auntie died of it (although not sure what age she was).

Not sure what I am hoping for from posting this really.

He eats well (lots of fruit), doesn't smoke and never has, he is a bit overweight (6 foot and 14 1/2 stone) but on the whole pretty good.

Thanks for reading.

Anyone? What else could it be?

Well I obviously can't diagnose, but it sounds very similar to my symptoms.
Mine came out of the blue, had an endoscopy as it felt like food was getting stuck, was belching, acid reflux etc and a pain at breastbone.

Turned out I have a Hiatal Hernia. Treated with medication such as Omeprazole.

zen1 · 22/04/2015 19:59

My friend had all the symptoms you mention (early 40s) and at endoscopy was found to have a small ulcer. The Dr prescribed omeprazole and she is still on it a few years later, even though the ulcer cleared up, as a preventative treatment.

My DF had stomach cancer and also had similar symptoms BUT he had been experiencing them for a lot longer than two weeks (several months) and his difficulty in swallowing meant he actually regurgitated food as it wouldn't go down. He actually had been suffering indigestion for many years before his symptoms got worse. Anyway, that was 20 years ago and he made a full recovery. The chances are your DH does not have stomach cancer as there are many other easily treatable conditions with these symptoms, such as reflux, ulcers, gastritis, h-pylori.

clmustard · 22/04/2015 20:07

I had similar symptoms. It was a hiatus hernia and gastritis. It is worrying but great to get such a quick appointment. Mine took 6 months!

Has he lost a lot of weight without trying?

cuntyMcCunterson · 22/04/2015 20:31

These are similar to my ongoing symptoms. My endoscopy showed gastritis and and currently being treated for IBS (due to some other symptoms)
I get regular pantoprazole after omeprazole was ineffective and I really helps keep the symptoms at bay.

Does he notice the symptoms are worse after eating any particular foods?
After keeping a food diary I stopped a lot of the trigger food which helped a lot

clmustard · 22/04/2015 21:02

tea and coffee hurt. my god I miss Coffee....

Workitbabe · 22/04/2015 21:03

Thanks so much for your replies. Sorry to hear of others suffering.
He has not lost weight. In fact has put it on! He is on omeprazole which is def helping. It all started out of the blue with a pain in his shoulder which made us think it was gallbladder.
Luckily dp has private medical so he has an initial consultation this Friday and the endoscopy next Thursday.
Thanks so much for responding. Feel so scared. Only been together since Jan 14 but I love him dearly.

I have gastritis caused by my Crohn's disease & my symptoms were the same as your partners. I've been on Omeprazole for over 5 years but it did seem to take ages to work & my dr had to increase the dose twice. I also went on a very bland diet & stopped drinking alcohol for a month which really helped. I've had 2 endoscopies & they were both ok. I asked for sedation the 1st time but I was so anxious it didn't work properly so I didn't bother 2nd time - just had the spray to numb my throat.

Hope your DP feels better soon & please try not to worry, if he isn't losing weight that's a good sign.

Workitbabe · 23/04/2015 16:19

Hi there

he has not had a scan re gallstones, but the GP said the blood test results were indication enough that the gallbladder was fine..
We were hoping it was that tbh.

Trying not to worry, as we can't really do anything about it. Coming on here has been helpful as there do seem to be things that it could be apart from the dreaded C word.

Thanks all. x

Hi dp saw consultant on Friday and he had a good feel of his abdomen and a detailed chat about symptoms. He thinks it is a hiatus hernia so dp is booked in for endoscopy next Thursday plus they are going to do a sigmoidoscopy. Also booked in for an ultrasound to rule out gallstones.
So feeling a bit less worried. I guess it is just the fact his auntie died of stomach cancer in her forties that rang alarm bells.
Hope everyone is doing ok.

My DH had this before. Very dramatic too it was with stomach noises, burping, indigestion etc. He had the endoscope too, just irritated stomach he did a course of omeprazole or one of those and it went away, never came back.
Acidic fruit is not your friend. Nor is tomato based sauces stuff like that. Alcohol another irritant especially without food with it.
If the stomach acid is going crazy it can come up the food pipe and irritate the oesphagus and back of throat which I think makes the body much more aware of the food being in there, because I get this when I go off and back on the tablets. Usually the food is unnoticed going down the throat into the stomach.
I am on the omeprazole now myself for years for excess acid.
I think these stomach problems just arise in people as they get older.

Thanks again all. I will post again when I know more. x

My FIL has similar symptoms (along with many other illnesses!) and knows he has a hernia, but has also recently been diagnosed with Barratts Oesophagus. He's on 3-monthly endoscopies for that at the moment.

He has had an enema as he is also having a sigmoidoscopy which made him feel dreadful. He is back up from having both procedures and is out of it. The consultant will be up later to tell us what he saw. I am shaking like a leaf. Not good with hospitals. Thanks all. Will report back.
