Getting on for 4 years ago I turned my ankle over sideways(ish) slipping off a step. It was excruciating at the time and I couldn’t put any weight on it at first. By the end of the day I could walk on my toes and could drive OK, so didn’t go to A&E (plus also, I’d broken my arm the year before and was still having a lot of problems with that and didn’t want to ‘go there’ again – stupid, I know).

Anyway, on and off I’ve continued to have problems with it. General pain and stiffness, a weird ‘floppy’ unstable feeling occasionally and constant clickiness when walking. Just at the moment it’s bloody agony! I will admit I’ve gained some weight recently which is presumably not doing it any favours. But today I’m having to go down stairs one at a time as dorsiflexion (thank you google!) is almost unbearably painful.

My question is, would I benefit from physio? And should I self-refer or would seeing my GP generally be a good idea?
TIA

You should see your GP because you may need to be referred for X rays and / or a specialist like an orthopedic surgeon.

Although you didn't break a bone ( assume!) you may have torn ligaments and they may have not healed properly or you may have broken a small bone ( in the past) and you now have some arthritis in the joints.

Also- if you have had 1 break (arm) and possibly another break in your foot then this should alert your GP to a fracture risk and you ought to have a bone density scan as 2 breaks like this could be a sign of osteoporosis .

Ah bum. Thanks pinkfrocks, I'll get on to the GP.
