My dd uses Lil lets teen range here She's only tiny and these are small and seem to be a better fit for her small size.

TooBusyByHalf · 22/04/2015 11:11

DD, also 11, uses Always ultra. She like wings though I hate them. Security most important thing if you are using towels I think.

seaoflove · 22/04/2015 11:12

I agree wings are best for preventing leaks, especially at night.

fuzzywuzzy · 22/04/2015 11:12

I bought DD a range, she prefers without wings, the Lilets as a previous poster says are the ones se likes most, altho she also likes the pound shop ones.

bluewireflower · 22/04/2015 11:13

thank you - do the Lil lets ones have wings?... dd plays a lot of sport.... so would like something that stays in place!

can I ask... did your daughters tell you they had started?...

Remember that some girls have heavy periods right from the start- don't assume the very tiny ones will be enough. How does she feel about tampons?

bluewireflower · 22/04/2015 11:18

I think she would freak out at tampons! I think I had periods for about a year before I figured out tampons!

my dd (11) finds the lillets towels quite small so I have got her some others to try - had to scrub a few pairs of pants to get blood out where they had leaked at the back and sides.

my niece uses kotex ones which you can get cheap from home bargains so have got my dd some to try next time

Hakluyt · 22/04/2015 11:23

Buy her a selection and let her experiment. Towels and tampons. Make sure she has disposal bags. And loads of black knickers in case of leakage.

Hakluyt · 22/04/2015 11:24

Oh, and give her permission to throw away any pants that get stained......

youmakemydreams · 22/04/2015 11:25

Ds is 11 and started in January. We are currently using the lilets teen range too. She uses the day and nighttime and yes they have wings. She has proper flow periods and they do the job well. They are as if not a little more absorbent than other ones. They are smaller for smaller pants really that is their selling point. She was a little put off by the size of things like always but is quite comfy with these.
She keeps a stock in a small purse in her school bag and has had no problems so far.
She did tell me in the morning after she had noticed getting out the shower the night before.

dementedpixie · 22/04/2015 11:25

and yes dd told me she had started.

I had bought her the lillets starter pack that comes in a wee zippy bag so she uses the zippy bag for school with a couple of towels and a spare pair of pants

insanityscatching · 22/04/2015 11:27

Yes dd told me about her first one, she hadn't told me about her second one I just noticed the wrapper in the bathroom bin. She's quite independent though and she had everything she needed so didn'tfeel the need to share I suppose.
Hakluyt dd's period is pretty heavy but the Lil lets are pretty absorbent, she does though, use the night time towels for the first couple of days.

NeedABumChange · 22/04/2015 11:32

Get some without wings too. I hated wings. They were massive and I was only tiny so they swamped my knickers and the wings didn't fit and made my bum itch!

NeedABumChange · 22/04/2015 11:33

Oh and buy a couple of multipacks of cheap big knickers so she doesn't ruin her favourites whilst she's still getting the hang of things esp. For at night.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 22/04/2015 11:39

Oh, good idea about throwing out any stained knickers. Don't know why but I hadn't really thought of that. Think I should buy a few extra packs of knickers for dd, as well as a variety of towels and tampons to choose from. dd seems slightly reluctant to discuss so I guess a well stocked bathroom cupboard may be the best I can do for her - and may be all she needs?

bluewireflower · 22/04/2015 11:46

thanks ladies. Off to the shops!

DSister (my youngest sister is 15, I'm in charge of her generally, long story) started at 12 and prefers Bodyform without wings.

pinkfrocks · 22/04/2015 14:26

OP Have you heard of Diary Doll pants? Developed by Carol Smillie and Annabel Croft for girls (and women) who play sport or just don't want any leaks.
They are like normal bikini pants but have a waterproof lining- not like a nappy- very comfy.

Diary Doll you can order them from John Lewis- mail order.

They are quite small fitting so maybe size up.

reallybadidea · 22/04/2015 16:37

Dd had leaks galore with the lillets teen towels and was better with Always with wings. She was adamant that she wasn't going to use tampons (she's still 11 and still a little girl really) but I bought some Tampax pearl just in case she changed her mind. When her period started on the second day of a holiday where she was desperate to swim every day she decided to give them a try and hasn't looked back. Now I've got a drawer full of Always towels from when I'd stocked up, grrr.

nelehluap · 24/04/2015 14:15

My eldest DD, aged 16 finds the cheapest towels the best...15p a pack in Tescos.....and her periods can be quite heavy at times. Whereas my younger DD, aged 11, has recently started and uses Always winged towels. I think with a child as young as 11 its easier for them to get used to wearing a towel if it has wings so they know its being put in the right place in their undies.

Cocolepew · 24/04/2015 21:28

DD is 13 and uses the Always Infinity ones.
Both her and DD1 wear tight black shorts over their knickers when having their period. They are from Primark and I think the might have be the sucky in type but dont really IYSWIM? Confused
DD1 started it because she likes to wear a thick pad, she has very heavy periods and it felt better for her.
