Anyone have a cure for vertigo?

I have been suffering with vertigo since Saturday afternoon and have no idea what to do to get rid of it.

I'm tired of stumbling around like a drunk and need to be at work tomorrow!

All suggestions greatly appreciated.

You need to see a doctor . Sounds like Ménière's disease

Notmeagain1 · 21/04/2015 00:52

Thanks, will go in the morning. Was hoping there would be something to do myself.

You could try ginger tea and keeping as quiet and still as possible but I think medication could be the way forward

Feel better soon

There are some exercises you can do to shift bits of debris which can sometimes be sloshing about in your inner ear - it shouldn't do too much harm to try some of those if you can find them on Google. But you need to go to the GP too.

Of course if you have an infection, all this is pointless Grin

GP prescribed antihistamine pills which worked for my DM.

Sounds like BPV ( benign positional vertigo) which you can treat yourself successfully

I have tablets that I take - Stemetil they usually work.

tangledyarn · 21/04/2015 09:24

If it's made worse by certain head movements like turning over in bed for instance then it could be BPPV in which case you could try the epley manoeuvre on yourself. A gp can check for that by doing a dix halpike manaourve.
If it's labyrithitis you can do cawthorne cooksey exercises which will help but they are not a quick fix.
If you find an answer let me know i've had severe vertigo for 18 months and am yet to find one unfortunately.

Sympathy, poor OP. It's such a horrible condition. I'm currently suffering a quite vicious return of the vertigo (diagnosed as Labyrinthitis, possibly viral) I first had three years ago. It makes me nauseous and nothing much helps, tho you can try Buccastem (an anti-histamine available over the counter if you explain to a pharmacist) and I also have some Meclizine, a similar drug which as well as anti-nausea properties has been shown, I believe, to positively affect the vestibular mechanism in cases of vertigo.

To be honest though nothing much works but time and keeping the head still, and not doing much. The exercises quoted in PPs may help.

If you are lucky your attack will be transient; it can go as quickly as it came. Otherwise I can't really see you getting to work tomorrow if it makes you as unsteady and with the whirling head and nausea as it does me.

Interestingly two people I know have similar symptoms at present. I didn't think labyrinthitis was contagious, in fact I'm fairly sure it isn't? (not medical) but maybe there is a virus going around that 'tends to' affect the inner ear? I really don't know if that's possible.

Get better soon OP. Flowers it is a really horrible thing and quite distressing at its worst, isn't it.

Notmeagain1 · 21/04/2015 10:00

Thank you for the advice. I will see my GP today and check back in if there i as anything they can do.

tangledyarn 18months! How do you do it? Just the past 4 to 5 days has been enough to drive me crazy. Any head movement and I think Im going to fall down, throw up or pass out. I hope they find something soon to give you some relief.Flowers for you as you deserve them.
