Underactive Thyroid People - are you REALLY feeling the cold right now?

I know I am - sitting in a house with the central heating on, jumpers on, scarf on, and still chilly, especially my face!

Just wondering if this is normal or not. I've been underactive for 10 years and am on 175mcg. Must check the last time I had a blood test.

Does anyone know if there is an upper daily throxine limit (wondering if mine needs upping)?

As I was just saying on another thread, my circulation is knackered, so my hands and feet are cold from around beg Oct to beg May. I'm on 125mcg a day. The levels in your blood isn't an exact science unfortunately you know. Yes, they get a number as a result but that same number could mean one thing for one person and another for the next. My doc is reluctant to up it unless there is definitely room for another dose's increase before it hits the top of the range iyswim. I saw an ad in the paper last w/e (The Independant) which I'd meant to cut out so as to ring the company. It was for winter underwear that was nice looking. I think someone had designed it for Agent Provocateur (sp?) Hth.

Hi Ivor, like the sound of the underwear, I need something to keep the old kidneys warm. I'd love to be able to wear attractive (i.e. skimpy!) night wear, but last night I was in woolly PJs, cardigan and bed socks (not exactly a turn on, eh!)

What about saying "Shall I put these on now .... or later?" when you've just got undressed for bed? Not that I'm the sort of hussy that does that kind of thing, of course!

bambi06 · 03/11/2006 21:41

what other symptoms do you have as im sure ive got an underactive thyroid too..i feel cold and cant get warm regardless..im more lethargic and basically want to slep all the time, at night i cant get warm in bed regardless then i cant sleep because im so cold..im more hungry than i used to be olus ive put on weight and cant get rid of it like i used to do so easily!!! how else can i tell?

IvortheEngine · 03/11/2006 21:47

You're best off seeing your doctor, asking for a blood test and going from there. The under and over active thyroid thing is not an exact science as I said before, so you can be losing weight when one of the symptoms is putting it on, etc etc. Say you suspect that your thyroid and iron levels need to be checked. You'll hopefully have an answer within days.

livelife2themax · 03/11/2006 22:08

hi i'm on 150 but i'm boiling hot! it is the right amount for me but its taken all symptoms away (I was down to level 1 and they didn't know how i did anything but now i'm at 20). if you're cold despite drugs should get it checked - might not be the thyroid at all but you should be fairly normal if your dose is right i reckon.

IvortheEngine · 03/11/2006 22:15

I've lost the ability to control my temp so now I can get ridiculously hot on times. I can overheat in bed when dh is just fine. So I can go from too cold to over heating just like that on occasions. When abroad last summer I was beside myself sometimes because I just couldn't cope with the temperature.

TwoIfBySea · 04/11/2006 22:34

I have Graves Disease and since going on Carbimazole have only had a few overheating instances. I don't get the chills, just the heat, the fatigue, the grumpyness and the fat. Oh joy.

I was told I would only be on it for 18 months and it should sort itself out so am a little intrigued that 10 years on you are still on medication. I am holding off having another baby until next summer when I come off these pills.

FrayedKnot · 04/11/2006 22:39

I think 250mcg is the highest does, isn;t it?

I'm only on 100 so it's only a hunch.

I'm not too bad tonight but have had a boiling hot shower earlier on to warm up.

DH despairs of me in winter as I get into bed with long nightshirt, vest, sometimes socks & hot water bottle....he is in the buff (all year round).

I agree I am hopeless at adapting to temperature. In teh hot weather I nearly died, I get palpitations for some bizarre reason when it gets very hot.

Thyroid disease is weird!!

FrayedKnot · 04/11/2006 22:40

BTW TIBS, I'm not sure about graves disease but if you are just straightforward hypothyroid you are on thyroxine for life.

TwoIfBySea · 04/11/2006 22:44

FrayedKnot and to think I am fed up having to take medication for 18 months. I hope it clears up.

Am glad I don't feel the cold though as I love this time of year, wouldn't though if my nose was turning blue.

IvortheEngine · 06/11/2006 22:21

I think I am stright forward underactive and I was told at the beginnig that I'll be taking thyroxine for the rest of my life. I have to say, it doesn't bother me at all but I know a couple of people who rebel. One stops for a while whenever she is fed up - not recommended, I think. The other is someone who refuses to take thyroxine at all. Also not recommended I gather as you increase your risk of other things if you do that. It does have one up side - free prescriptions with your medical exemption certificate.
