Last night my 21 months old DD woke at 1.30am projectile vomiting madly. She continued to vomit until around 3am. She had no temperature and is fine temprament-wise so I doubt it is a bug or something she ate, more likely a case of over-stuffing herself yesterday evening.

She woke at 6.30am this morning and has only been 'sick' (more retching and bile than anything) twice since. I have been giving her small sips of cold mineral water and no food, I'm planning to try her on something light and bland for lunch, see if she can keep that down.

She's sleeping now, I expect she'll be down for a good few hours due to her disturbed night. Do any of you have any pearls of wisdom which may help ???

keep up the fluids, introduce a bit of toast if she's hungry. mineral water can be quite salty, so I'd stick to tap.

Ok, thanks. Would you offer her dry toast of shall I be brave and stick a bit of butter on it ?

you can put a scraping on it, I think, dry toast is a bit unpalatable imo. my gp said last time dd was sick that you can give them solids if they haven't been sick for 6 hrs, starvation no longer necessary in his opinion. avoid milky things though, as they can't be digested properly by the gut once the gut has been through all this, for a while at least.

Our DD did a similar thing a while back, just woke up and was sick everywhere. She did this a couple of times again but then went staight back to sleep. Still not sure what caused it but I did keep an eye on her over the next day. Think I waited until lunchtime before I tried her with food and she did eat it.

Do you think a boiled egg and some toast soldiers would be ok for lunch ? She'll be approx 5 hours (hopefully) since her last bout.

Not the egg - just try toast and clear fluids. Doesn't matter if she doesn't eat anything all day, as long as she drinks clear fluids and still has wet nappies. She might be very tired and sleep or be lethargic and clingy and want carried all day - thats normal. Try not to worry - you are probably much more upset by this than she is!
If she stops having wet nappies call the health visitor.

and if she won't drink try fruity ice lollies

Thanks for the advice, I'll give it a go.

WSM I wouldn't give egg or in fact butter the toast if I were you. If you can stick to the really bland stuff today she's more likely to be much better by tomorrow than if she eats something that upsets her again. The best things are dry toast / bread, plain biscuits, boiled rice or pasta without sauce. I'd avoid dairy and citrus stuff too.

WSM · 29/04/2004 13:12

She's managed a few slivers of very lightly buttered toast and so far, so good. She ate it around an hour+ ago so I'm hopeful !

Thats good WSM. Just make sure she drinks clear fliuds - it doens't really matter if she doesn't eat but you don't want her to get dehydrated.Thats the main thing to worry about with little ones.

Hi WSM, how is your DD now? Hope she's much better. When my DD gets sick, she stays that way for abour a week before she can eat 'properly' again. BUT then I got in touch with a Homeopath last time, she gave her 'arsenicum' and, lo and behold she was absolutely perfect following taking it. Ate a banana about an hour later, then was completely back to normal (the sickness lasted a matter of hours rather than the usual days!) it was absolutely amazing! My GP says to encourage blackcurrant juice (high in potassium) and then when eating, bananas as they are too, and they're also binding. Apparently there's always a certain amount of potassium in the stomach, but a large percentage can be expelled when they are puking, so it's good to try to replace it.
Hope everything's ok now .
