Can anyone share experiences - DH on urgent referral due to nasty looking mole?

I feel relatively relaxed that he spotted it very early on so even if nasty it is likely to be caught early on to stop it getting worse. DH though struggles with anxiety and I am really worried about how worried he is getting about it.
Can anyone share their experiences with anything similar that I use to make him feel better?
Thanks

Yes, my mum had an urgent referral too
She was sent home for the GP to "keep an eye on it". This was about 8 years ago and nothing has happened
I'm sorry your OH suffers from anxiety, things like this can feel utterly unbearable

I had an urgent referral too. The consultant removed it and sent it away for testing. I've never heard anymore about it.

My DS had one, was monitored for 6 months then removed. It turned out to be benign. They removed it under local and he rather likes the scar!

I had a mole on my back sort of behind my shoulder and it kept scaling over & even bled a tiny bit. I was referred urgently too, had it off and all came back fine.

It's a bit different to the others, but my best friend had one removed. It was malignant, but they cut that and a piece of her forearm away. That was about 4 years ago now, she is full body photographed every 3 months to keep an eye on any other changes but has been fine ever since with no more treatment required.

I have been referred twice. Once it was removed and came back as nothing. The second one the consultant looked at it and said he had no idea why the GP had referred me as it was not a mole but a blood blister and sent me home . Smile

Both me and DH have been referred for moles, for both of us it was the same experience: Dr took a close look at it with magnifying/lighting tools (don't know the name!), declared it fine, did a quick full-body check to look for any other moles and sent us on our way.
It is likely nothing, try not to worry too much.

Don't get stressed by the urgent referral tag; any symptom where ONE of of possible outcomes COULD be cancer has to be seen within two weeks of your initial doctors appointment, its a government NHS target.

I have had two referrals for moles, one removed, one just examined. Both fine.
I've also been referred under the two week rule for gynae and gastro symptoms. All good outcomes.

In all cases my doctor was good enough to explain the reasoning behind the two week referral rule to put things into context. I don't think enough doctors do this which makes many people like yourself and you husband worry, almost certainly unnecessarily.

makeusabrew · 17/04/2015 15:52

Sorry, that sounded dismissive of your husbands worry completely, when of course its normal to be concerned. Once this health scare is out of the way, and if his anxiety if really affecting him badly, it may be worth asking his doctor for a referral for some CBT. It really is brilliant for health anxiety issues. Good luck with everything.

Moles are like breast lumps. The overwhelming majority that get referred turn out to be benign. But I know 2 people who had stage 1 melanoma who are still here 20 years' later. Just regular check-ups.

I've a relative going through this at the moment. The GP told his wife that he was behaving entirely normally. Apparently, men tend first to catastrophise -'how will my family get on without me?' - and then go into hermit mode.

I had a cancer scare last year, which took nearly 2 months to resolve, thankfully OK. I was so anxious I couldn't eat and can't recommend highly enough a low dose anti-d and short- term valium till they kick in. We tend to be a bit too stiff-upper-lip in this country - it's routine in the U.S.A, but stress takes a heavy toll of seratonin levels.

Good luck!

DH was urgently referred for a mole check. The suspect moles were removed under local anaesthetic and sent of for testing. Fortunately they were benign.

I had one removed last year, that went bigger and a funny shape, I had not noticed as it was on my back, my DH saw it when I was getting changed, turned out it had three out of the five markers of concern. Turned out to be nothing at all and the big mole on my back has gone too.
