Period Pain

I am suffering with horrendous period Pain and am at my wits end. I have been prescribed mefenamic and tranexamic acid for my heavy periods and I am taking paracetamol. It really doesn't seem to be helping and I am on my way into work for a long shift not knowing how I will get through it! The GP has been quite dismissive of my problems in an all women have them way. I don't what other pain relief I can take but I am getting pretty desperate. I am going to try and see a different GP but appointments at my surgery are quite difficult to get. Any one have any ideas on coping in the meantime?

There was a similar thread on this the other day, might be worth a look? There's some good advice on it. You're not alone!!

I would try and see another GP within the practice asap with a view to getting a gynae referral. Do not leave there without one of these.

This type of problem is well outside a GPs remit and you need to see a gynaecologist. Endometriosis is a common cause of severe period pain and it is also a very much underdiagnosed disease. It can also cause heavy bleeding to arise (you should also be assessed to see if there are fibroids too as these can also cause heavy bleeding). Endometriosis is not normally picked up on scans, swabs and blood tests as the endo deposits are so small. Its usually diagnosed through a keyhole surgery op called a laparoscopy.

Do not put up with this and tell them that the medications you are on are not working. Also such things only try (and sometimes fail) to tackle the symptoms; they do not address the root cause. You certainly need to know why this is happening and I would suggest too that you keep a daily pain and symptom diary if you do not already do so. This will also give the gynae clues when you show this to this person.

Do not be fobbed off any more with pills or the mirena, you will need to be persistent in order to get answers.

Can you see a practice nurse?
DD saw ours locally and was put on tranexamic acid first (didn't work) and then on microgynon which has worked 100%: she used to be laid out for two days with period pain, but not any more.
