Acute pain in tooth, but told nothing clinically wrong. What now?

My tooth has been hurting for a few weeks. It was sore once or twice when eating at first, but has now become worse. It is sore even now as I sit typing and I haven't eaten anything in hours, so nothing irritating it.

The dentist last week looked at it, bashed it with the end of her mirror, which did not hurt and said there was nothing clinically wrong with it and just to "see how I go". I am pregnant so she said she could not x-Ray it. The thing is it is now getting ridiculous. For several hours a day it is a constant nagging pain and at certain points it becomes a stabbing pain up my tooth into my face and is very unpleasant. I have no idea what to do about it. I have tried the Colgate toothpaste that says to rub it in whilst experiencing pain too get relief, but this achieves nothing. I use sensitive toothpaste normally.

The dentist said it was well documented that people experience tooth pain in pregnancy- I can't really find any evidence of this though.

Has anyone experienced this? Does anyone have any suggestions? I am wondering about changing dentists as I don't feel I can cope with this much longer. I am not usually a pain wuss, but it is really getting to me.

Thanks

I'd definitely change dentists. Toothache is awful. At meast get a second opinion.

My mum was told she was suffering from depression which was making her think she had toothache in a 'dead' tooth. Turned out she had a massive abscess.
Get a second opinion.

See another dentist. You may need an X-ray and you can have an X-ray in pg if properly managed. I had one. Or they might go straight to antibiotics. Your dentist sounds odd.

See your gp, tell them there is nothing wrong with your tooth. There is a condition that effects the nerve that runs under the teeth along the jaw that presents as tooth pain. sorry I cant remember the name!

GoldfishCrackers · 13/04/2015 19:32

Trigeminal Neuralgia? Often mistaken for toothache. See a GP if no luck with dentists.

VenusRising · 13/04/2015 19:41

Abscess?

Have you had a cold recently? I always get toothache when I have a cold. Apparently inflamed sinuses can cause pressure on the nerves.

cookiefiend · 13/04/2015 21:42

Well I am glad that not one of you said to man up and see how it goes! I shall seek a second opinion- thanks. Will try GP if there really is no cause.

Thanks

That's it goldfish!

I've heard tmj can present as toothach in its early stages, but again you'd need to have it checked out by a decent dentist.

lucsnowe · 13/04/2015 23:40

I had exactly this and then it turned out I had a massive abscess! The dentist also tapped the tooth, as yours did, and said all fine. I would see another dentist Asap. Good luck!

This happened to me recently. Was seeing an NHS dentist who x-rayed and declared nothing wrong with my teeth. I was getting so down about it I sought a second opinion off a private dentist. I had severe tooth decay which ended up in root canal surgery - he says it would have been very noticeable on the x-ray my previous dentist had taken.

My advice - seek a second opinion

Thanks all- will do. Glad it is not just me being whiny.

I went to the dentist with pain, even had a tooth pulled before finding that it was trigeminal neuralgia.
