What time would 'first on the list' for afternoon surgery be?

And what time would you expect to get home if it was minor surgery performed under general anaesthetic?

If it helps, I have to be there for 12pm.

Thank you! That is really helpful. Have a v clingy small baby who will tolerate being without me for a couple of hours but then completely loses it and just cries hysterically until she sees me again. My poor friend will have her so it is helpful to be able to say roughly how long it will all take!

Ooo... good question.

I was told by my booking in person that I've been pencilled in for an op on the 20th April and that I was 'first on the list, so we won't lose you'.

I've been given a confirmed date for a morning operation a week tomorrow and am quietly (or not so quietly as far as a few friends are concerned) bricking it that I might get cancelled.

In my experience, my local hospital is never in a rush for discharging people. Also, if you have any reaction to the anaesthetic or bp etc it could be possible with an afternoon surgery that you end up being kept in overnight.

I'm the reverse. I've been told by my surgeon that it's usually a night's stay. The pre-op nurse, however, assumed I'd be home the same day. I'm expecting to be kept in, but won't worry if I am deemed well enough to be sent home that day.

Good luck for it going smoothly and you getting home as soon as you can. x

My Dad was admitted for morning surgery, though and they finally got round to seeing him at 4pm. I don't know if there were afternoon procedures booked that day and what happened to them if there were.

I just have my fingers crossed that I don't get cancelled! It's taken a long time to get to have my op and I'm missing a very stressful week at work as a matter of co-incidence for when the date fell so on both occasions I'm hoping it goes forward as planned.

bronya · 12/04/2015 22:47

Really hoping all will go smoothy. Baby would not cope with me being in overnight. She just screams and screams Sad. I suppose she would scream herself to sleep eventually.

Smoothly - phone!!

I hope they see you promptly and send you home as soon as they can.

SockQueen · 12/04/2015 23:28

If you are having a GA, you will need to have an adult at home with you overnight - do you have this arranged as well as your childcare?

bronya · 13/04/2015 00:21

Yes SockQueen all sorted. The whole thing has required rather a lot of planning and quite a few favours from friends as DH couldn't get holiday that matched with the hospital dates.

The last time DD was in for surgery we sat there waiting for 3 hours and then were sent home, asked to return the next day (which we couldn't do as I didn't have any child care for the boys). We were rescheduled for the following week and I had a phone call that morning to say the op had been cancelled.

At that point we just went privately.

Hope yours goes much more smoothly.

AspieAndNT · 13/04/2015 08:46

At our hospital afternoon surgery commences at 1.30pm - if the previous lists are not over running.

Just because they say you are first, be prepared for that to change.

18yearstooold · 13/04/2015 08:58

I got discharged from day surgery at 8pm whilst I was still staggering around and bumping into things

Is that not supposed to happen then?

I was last on the list though

The list may well be re-ordered on the day depending on a variety of factors. This includes the fact that you have a small baby at home, so make sure your surgeon knows that, so they can take that into account. I would want to keep someone near the beginning of the list if they have a small baby.

bronya · 13/04/2015 09:35

Thanks for all the info! Yes they know I am bf and have a small baby as we nearly had to cancel because she wouldn't take a bottle! Have already thought I should remind the anaesthetist about the medication I am allergic to and my asthma. Is it them I need to tell about bf?

Sitting all gowned up and worried now. Forgot to tell them to be careful with my hips.

How are you Bronya? Did you make it out in plenty of time?

bronya · 14/04/2015 03:01

Got in to surgery just before 2pm, was allowed to go home at 9pm. Thankfully they let DD visit quickly when I got back to the ward. Anaesthetist gave me a short acting gas so I can bf after 12 hours not 24. Had a fight to get pain relief I can take though as they didn't have diclofenac (or anything else suitable that was stronger than paracetamol) in stock. Have a presciption to fill tomorrow instead. Children were desperate for Mummy cuddles when I got home. My toddler woke up all upset and they are now both asleep next to me while I watch over them. If I move an inch, he wakes.
