Propranolol for migraine

Just started propranolol 40mg twice daily for migraine prophylaxis. Since Tuesday past.

Ye gods, I am not enjoying it. Can't decide how much is the propranolol, and how much is mega-virus (3 weeks of cough/cold/flu and general roughness). I feel light headed, headaches, nausea, no appetite, stomach cramps, fatigue. I'm having to go to bed round 9pm. Then waking at 4am and not getting back over.

And the flatulence! Blush I have ibs so can be farty but this is beyond a joke. Tummy bloated so I look pregnant. Bad cramps, tummy upset and the smell is appalling.

Anyone had experience of propranolol? Is this right? Does it wear off???

Had been planning to tough it out but considering dropping to once a day and waiting couple of weeks to build it up to raise a day?

I've taken 80mg once a day for 18months now and it helps.

My side effects lasted a month but did lessen after two weeks.

Stick at it Flowers

I was prescribed Propranolol for migraines when I was 14ish (12 years ago) I know I felt pretty rough (sick/tired/very light headed) on them for at least a month, and then after that I was okay apart from freezing hands and feet constantly! I think I was on 50mg and then it was upped a few months later and went through the same symptoms but it did settle! Hope this helps

Yes that helps to know lucky and stacks - having a rough timeframe helps! Don't think it helps that feel so rough on top of an extended period of feeling rough from virus, probably could shrug it off more rather than feeling sorry for myself. While farting continuously and disgusting myself!

Put myself on magnesium b2 and co q 10 enzyme and my gut feeling is that these are helping - definitely shorter and lighter, but will persist with propranolol and see. The ironic thing being I though a beta blocker wouldn't have many side effects compared to amitruptline or topirimate... That'll learn me!!!

Glad both your migraines have improved Flowers

I was prescribed this for anxiety following a traumatic event. I had side effects for a few weeks, mainly nightmares and waking several times during the night.

I've suffered from migraines since puberty, often having several a week. Since being on Propranolol for 5 months, I've only had one. It has been a miracle cure for me, and completely unintentional as it wasn't prescribed for that reason.

The side effects disappear as your body adjusts to it - the doctor assured me of this and it has been the case.
