Wisdom tooth removal - dry socket dressing

holidayseeker · 10/04/2015 16:30

I had my wisdom tooth extracted on Tuesday and today went back to the dentist as I had some bone sticking out of my gum.

Whilst there the dentist advised the gym was healing well but that he would add a packing to aid healing. From looking on here it seems the packing is one that is used for dey socket but he did not mention anything about this to me he just advised it would heal it quicker.

Is this right? Do people normally have the packing. If they don't have an infection or dry socket?

See, I wouldn't be happy with tht response from the dentists surgery at all. One of the times my DH ws suffering I just bundled everyone in the car nd drove him there! The dentist Saw him between appointments.

I don't know bout the cheese thug. But I wouldn't go near it with a tooth pick, sorry! (But it sounds like Psipsina is more in the know than me!)

For. Fucks.sake. Thing, not thug! I have a new iPad cover and it's sending my typing bonkers!

Julia - I have decided to call my regular dentist to see what he suggests with regards to the bone.

I am now going to go back to liquid food for dinner. I have barely eaten te last few days and so thought let's have a cheese sandwich I didn't realise the cheese would be stuck.

Psipsina - I definelty won't use saltwater again till bedtime

Can I also just ask, if I had tooth out on Tuesday should I still be having to take pain killers every 4 hours to stop the pain? My paracetamols have worn out now as I am trying to have less and I feel a burning pain inside my mouth but not sure if from extraction site or bone. I also kept pain along my upper jaw and occasionally towards the ear

My DH (sorry to bang on, but it was dreadful) had the jaw pain too. He took painkillers pretty well constantly for 8 weeks. I don't want to stress you out, but we had no idea it could be as bad as it was for so long. He is however, fine now, 4 months on.

As a comparison,my mum had some serious surgery just before Christmas (chest cracked open type serious) and dh had his tooth out 10 days later. I got a phone call saying I needed to come home: because of how bad Dh was, not my mum! He even cried because he felt lame compared to my mum. But knowing it was going to be bad would have helped. I think the infected dry socket made the pain levels much much worse, so do try to not dislodge that clot.

Get your feet up, a warm hot water bottle on your face and try to relax, eh?

holidayseeker · 13/04/2015 21:08

Your not banging on, it's helpful to me as I have no idea what to expect or how long it should hurt. I have read online about people being fine the next day but maybe as my wisdom tooth was facing the tooth in front of it and still a bit in the gum that's why it hurts so much.

I've just reached the point today where I am fed up as I thought I would be better by now and i feel the dentist will be getting fed up of me keeping on ringing them when people have this carried out all the time and are fine.

I am also at work from tomorrow until Friday and don't know how I am going to do it. I defintely won't be able to talk much as the bone is so sore when talking.

You might have to think about phoning in sick. See how you go.

It's one of those things, some people do sail through an extraction, some don't. Have you tried a warm hot water bottle?

holidayseeker · 13/04/2015 21:40

No I don't have a hot water bottle, think I will go to bed for am early night instead.

Well I have phoned the dentists back this morning and embarrassingly cried down the phone at them that I can't wait 4 weeks. It was a different receptionist to yesterday and she said it was ridiculous having to wait that long and I have an appointment for this afternoon.

She wonders if I might have dry socket as right now my jaw aches, I have a dull throbbing pain, I feel light headed and sick and the stupid bone keeps sticking my into my tongue.

Maybe you do. In which case it can be sorted easily. Remember dry socket isn't an infection. It's just the bone being exposed to the air/saliva/whatever food makes its way into the socket. It is self limiting.

I had an extraction a few months ago and lost the clot somehow. I had it packed but the gauze fell out straight away, whereupon I had to just keep rinsing the socket with corsodyl and putting eugynol into it. It was painful for about a week and then it started to resolve.

It was either that or keep bothering the dentist and I didn't have time to keep going there.

Good luck and I hope they can sort it out for you.

holidayseeker · 14/04/2015 10:15

Thank you I am hoping so

I had a molar out just before Xmas last year and got dry socket. It was soooo painful - you'd definitely know if you had it! I went back four times I think to have the brown yucky stuff replaced as it was the only thing that helped with the pain. After the pain died down I noticed a bone fragment in my gum which was annoying but not really painful. After about a week it worked it's way through the gum and I could just flick it out. That happened twice. Hopefully your bone fragment will work it's way out by itself too but I do remember the dentist saying I could go back and he could remove it if it got too annoying - by that point I just wanted to steal clear of dentists for a while! Good luck, hope it sorts itself out.

holidayseeker · 14/04/2015 12:30

Thanks tft that is what makes me think it's not dry socket as I have read it's unbelievably painful where as mine hurts and is sore but not that bad.

Hopefully it's just the bone and once removed it will hopefully feel better

No dry socket, but dentist had to remove the spiky bone and it was agony. He has ground it of and now I have a hole for 3 weeks until the skin grows over. This will hurt they say for 5 days the same type of throbbing pain as having tooth removed and it hurts to swallow still as I can still feel something digging into my throat. I wondering if that is bone and if it will go when skin covers.

I am feeling rotten Sad and so sore

Well this morning I have woken up with a really tight chest which I am guessing is from tensing up yesterday during the procedure. I am also back to barely being able I open my jaw again and my throat feels swollen.
