He is due to start statins but my father asked me what can he do to lower it without medication.

What are your experiences, please advice.

Thankyou

my mil had high cholesterol reading, all the doc said was cut out biscuits and cake Hmm
she kind of panicked a bit stopped eating chips from chippy where they cook in beef fat and stopped eating butter and is using spread stuff, on her next test it had dropped right down

He can start by cutting out dietary cholesterol and saturated fats as much as possible. I'm surprised that they have offered statins after a single high blood cholesterol as it can be so affected by diet in the short term.
There are some nutraceuticals which can help: the flora range with plant sterols and some other brands.
If he's worried about statins perhaps he could put his energies into the lifestyle changes for two weeks and then ask for another blood test?

If you want to PM me can give you lots of info about a healthy (mainly meat free) course/diet I followed. Only saying PM as don't know the rules re advertising a specific product/course that can cost money. Although should point out have nothing whatsoever to do with the people who run the course. It was strict initially no meat, dairy but went from 7.8 to 5.5 in 6 weeks and now maintain a modified version of diet for last 12 months and maintained lower cholesterol with no drugs whatsoever!!

A low carb high fat diet has dropped mine and improved good:bad cholesterol figures. What's his ratio?

Elibean · 10/04/2015 14:37

Daily Benecol (or similar) did it for me. Porridge supposedly good (oats). Cutting out lots of animal/dairy fats.

Mine was 5.9 last reading, and I'm back on the Benecols and avoiding chocolate....but not a lot else I can change in my diet really.

Elibean · 10/04/2015 14:38

Oh yes, eating oily fish - I do, and I have a good ratio at least!

Exercise - a good walk straight after the main meal - leave the dishes - reasonably brisk for an hour.

More fruit and veg, pulses, nuts, and oats.

pinkfrocks · 10/04/2015 17:40

My mum's was over 6 and she did get it down to under 5 but she had to cut out so many things- all cakes, biscuits, etc and she's never been a big meat eater - and lost weight ( she was 80+ at the time.)
After a TIA she agreed to take statins.

Exercise is also important and adding in good fats from plants ( avocados), nuts, oily fish, olive oil, rape seed oil.

You need to consume 25 grams of Benecol or similar product (substituting butter) for it to have any meaningful impact.

It's just marketing hype and the clinical evidence is lacking.
