I am nearly 50 and not reached menopause and had my two children (now 13 and 10). My fibroids are very large and causing horrible pain and urinary symptoms. I have had a mirena coil for 5 years which has dealt with all the bleeding problems but now my symptoms are unmanageable. Saw a gynaecologist who I trust yesterday; I can have hysterectomy (leaving ovaries in) which will deal with problem permanently (have already had myomectomy and two caesarian so already a total of 3 lots of uterine surgery) or have Prostap homone injections plus Livial hormone supplement for 6 months which ought to shrink them down and buy me some time to reach menopause naturally when fibroids will shrink. But I'm a bit scared cos when I had my fibroids shrunk before my myomectomy prior to children it was agony.
AAGGHHH.... really don't know what to do. Advice/experience welcome!

I had a hysterectomy two and a half years ago, due to fibroids, best thing I've done. I was slightly younger (49 now) but don't regret it at all. They left one ovary but removed everything else, I'd go for it!

I'd go for the hysterectomy myself. Especially with your previous experience of fibroid shrinking.

I had one last year for fibroids and wasn't really given any other options but I was 44 so I suppose I would have had a good few more years for them to grow back before menopause.

I wasn't prepared for quite how wrecked I would feel immediately after the surgery but was well on the mend after a fortnight or so and now I feel better than I have in years and I've even found the night sweats (which I assumed were peri-menopause related) I'd been having have improved.

I absolutely love not having periods anymore too Grin Mirena didn't make a blind bit of difference for me and ablation only improved things very slightly so I was very anaemic for years.
