Hi all
Need some reassurance. I'm a single mum and feel guilty as hell. Took son to dentist today and he needs a filling. He's SEVEN. Good diet etc but have had constant rows about teeth cleaning. Today told he has a small hole in a molar and needs a filling. He is distraught! As am I. I do the best I can but now feel I have failed him. Small problem compared to some but alone on this...

Is it a baby tooth or an adult one? my dc has 2 fillings and is 8 (he doesn't have good enamel on some of his teeth) Dd has no fillings age 11.

Oh poor you Fu1Fu1, please don't feel guilty. One small filling, even in permanent tooth is a shame but at least it can fixed easily before it gets worse and I bet his attention to dental hygiene will be considerably better now Ds has experience of what happens when he doesn't do what Mummy says and clean his teeth - maybe not so many rows about it in future? Has he had the fissure sealant preventive treatment on his molars? If not, it's worth asking about.

Fillings are caused by sugar/acid rather than lack of brushing. Fizzy drinks and squash with sugar, sweets etc. Im 36 with no fillings and my three kids have none either. The trouble is its being made that 'normal' to have them that people arent seeing how much of a concern it is.

of course lack of brushing is an issue as it removes food, plaque and bacteria. Fruit, dried fruit and juices are just as bad for teeth as sweets. Being smug is not going to help the OP come to terms with the fact her dc is getting a filling.

Primarily lack of brushing usually leads to a build up of plaque and gum disease in the first instance depending on the amount of sugar and fruit acids coming into contact with the teeth. I wasnt trying to be smug, just pointing out really that our adult teeth are with us for a long time so have to try our best to hang onto them. I wasnt knocking op as a mother, we all do as best we can. Im a qualified dental hygienist so teggies are my passion Grin
