It started off in my face, across my cheek. It felt as though I'd sprayed deep heat across my face. There was no rash, no redness, it just felt hot. It moved into my back as well, then into my leg. I also had a week where I felt really, really drunk too and my legs felt like jelly, they were weak after for a few weeks and I felt like I was going to fall over when I walked. My GP did a blood test for Vitamin D deficiency and diabetes and told me I wouldn't have symptoms like this or I'd be dead Confused. I went back and I saw two other doctor's in the practice, and managed to get a neurology referral from the last one by exaggerating the pins and needles which I'd had in my feet. She did a quick sensation test and I couldn't feel the skin on my arms in some parts and she faxed a referral the same day. I was diagnosed 6 years ago and I get the odd burning sensation in one leg now, the neurologist said it's the nerves firing but they are pissed off. I'm really not saying you have this, there's loads of causes for a burning sensation and loads of reasons why a nerve can be pissed off, shingles is one.

Cocolepew · 10/04/2015 20:33

I have paresthesia on my back from a very mild dose of shingles I only had 3 tiny blisters but get the shingle type feeling in the same place a lot.

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 10/04/2015 20:39

Oh, that must feel crappy Cocolepew Sad The doctor can prescribe medication to help with the pain. What about acupuncture? I tried that and it did help. It's difficult to find a proper Chinese doctor though, don't go to a herbmedics/place in your local shopping centre though.

40slady · 10/04/2015 21:01

hmm interesting ...had a whole host of blood tests done in feb , all ok except slightly low white count ...having re test in 2 weeks , went to doc today about the pain and she examined me did a sensation test (with hands) i could feel her wasnt sore on touch but does feel hot sensation like burning ...very odd , said not shingles at all ,. more likely nerve damage sensitivity and to do some gentle exercises t help ..

You could do with a neurology referral really. They will check your balance and do sensation checks (with fingers and something very sharp!). Gentle exercises don't help nerve problems but they do need to find out what's caused it.

40slady · 10/04/2015 21:10

yea bit odd ..trying not to worry to much .. Hmm have got doc appt 2 weeks to discuss the blood test results when i get that done in a week ..so will ask then as im doubtful will get bloods any ssoner

I don't think GP's are experts really, they are supposed to refer onwards.

I hope you get some answers and are feeling better quickly. It's not fun. Thanks

40slady · 10/04/2015 21:17

I used to take Gabapentin LadySybil, I took Paraesthesias really bad all over my body after a big Lupus flare.
I have weaned myself off it because the side effects were similar to being in a flare!
So far its managable but my face has the 'creepy crawly' feeling today Hmm
Hope you get sorted soon 40slady Flowers

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 11/04/2015 12:20

Oh, that must be horrid!! Sad Thanks Did they check your Vitamin D levels? Sometimes taking supplements can help. A deficiency can make you feel as though you have MS symptoms - paraesthesia, leg pain, headache, fatigue, muscle weakness.

Cocolepew · 11/04/2015 12:22

I take vit d3, b complex vits and magnesium which helps Smile

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 11/04/2015 12:30

Smile sounds good. Magnesium is really useful too.

I'm supposed to take 4,000 units a day of Vit D which is a whopping amount (my GP triple checked it too). I thought the dose for non-MS patients was lower but be aware that the pills you buy from Holland & Barrett may not be strong enough. Vitamin D council (who'd have thought there was such a thing!) recommend 5,000 Shock Some of this you'd get from oily fish and sunlight though www.vitamindcouncil.org/blog/why-does-the-vitamin-d-council-recommend-5000-iuday/ so I'd probably be looking at the dose on the bottle, I wouldn't go above 2,000.

monkeysaymoo · 11/04/2015 12:31

I have this too at the moment but it's all over not just one place. Dr did blood tests and said I had low iron so now have iron tablets and I have started taking some vitamin supplements. It seems to calm down and then flare up again though and has been doing so for a few months now so wondering if it is iron related or something else?

It's flared up again this week and is quite bad and tbh it's now making me quite anxious. Have booked another appointment for the Dr but go on holiday tomorrow so it won't be until I come back.

Not sure if there is anything I can do to relieve it a bit whilst I'm away?

Sorry for hijacking OP

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 11/04/2015 12:47

Hi monkeysaysmoo Smile Sensations like this are usually because the nerve is pissed off and it's misfiring.

There's some info here www.livestrong.com/article/478084-iron-levels-peripheral-neuropathy/ I did try acupuncture and that worked really well but it can depend on the Chinese doctor that you see and not all patients respond to it. You could pop to the pharmacy to see if there's something that you can get over the counter, if you have the time? They may be able to advise you for now until you can get to see your GP.

My burning pain settles down and comes back, I'm really good at blocking it out though. If I sit funny or don't move around enough then it comes back, usually if there isn't enough space on the bus/train.

monkeysaymoo · 11/04/2015 13:08

Thanks lady I will pop to the pharmacy later and see if they can recomend something just to help whilst I wait for my appointment. It's more the worry of what might be causing it rather than the symptoms that are bothering me at the moment.

Will take a look at the link thank you

40slady · 11/04/2015 14:19

Hi monkey , what are your symptoms ? interesting as i to have low iron ...
i had this about 4 weeks ago then last week came back and looking back had a episode around xmas to ....
im thinking could also be all be stress related ..

It's a prickly, burning sensation pretty much all over but it feels worse/more noticeable in my hands and on my torso. No rash and doesn't hurt to touch.

I've been taking iron for a month and it did kind of go but has come back with a vengeance this week. I've tried piriton and using some cream prescribe by the dr just in case it is a reaction to someting but it doesn't help.

I have just taken a couple of ibuprofen and although not gone it seems to have helped.
