A friend sent me a url to a page about the cost of care in the UK and i have to say it seems pretty alarming. Anyone had any first hand experience of facing up to the costs of care?

I will try and find the page my friend sent me but certainly took me back!

Hi All, so i reliase this hasnt been getting much love this group :/ but i came across a couple guides that show exactly what my fears have been suggesting. The cost of care seems very high, i spoke to one colleague of mine who said that she had to move her mum to a care home and it was costing her £500 a week and she was only recieving an additional £160 a week in support!

these places seem to look into it a little bit further:

Residential care gives you about the same service as a hotel with additional staff and equipment to look after your personal needs. It's going to be expensive. And we are all going to get old. Get that pension plan in place right now.

Yes. My FIL is in a care home costing £580 a week. He will get no state support towards costs until his assets are diminished to around £28k.

What exactly are you shocked about? I can't really see how else it could be done, funding everyone's old age care would be extortionate. He has assets (savings, good pension income, house is exempt because my MIL lives there), if he didn't the state would step in.

Hi Sophy, i guess it just comes as a shock as i have read quite a bit from Janet Davies at Symponia, and she refered to the new legislation being nothing more than a bit of a con. It's all a bit new to me so maybe i'm not grasping the simplcty of it but it is quite dauniting.

Mum's Dementia unit is over 1k a week funded by sale of her house.
