Underactive thyroid symptoms...what were yours?

Hello, it's been suggested that I should visit my GP for a blood test to rule out an underactive thyroid and I'd be really interested in hearing from anyone who actually has this. What prompted you to go to the GP? How was it treated and how are you now?

Since having my ds I've struggled to lose weight; can't seem to do it regardless of diet. My memory is useless, thought in fits and starts, I struggle to remember words when I'm talking!! I regularly feel a little low and seem to have periods lasting for weeks on end (sorry, probably tmi.)

Be grateful for any feedback. Thanks

I was irritable, lost a lot of hair, and felt more sensitive to the heat. I also put on some weight. I have been on synthroid for about 15 years now. I am sure someone else will be along with more info.

Thanks Sunchowder. Did the medication help you?

Thanks Kama. Glad to hear that its mostly improved. I'm going to call the GP's surgery and get an appointment booked; I was worried that he might write me off as a hypochondriac.

i am underactive but thats cos i had my thyroid removed. My dh is naturally underactive (opposites attract!?) and he had extreme lethargy, trouble getting motivated(still has this when it comes to cleaning the car out!) and also a bald patch which has not grown back 4 yrs on.

The synthroid keeps me in check. I have to get bloodwork done every six months to ensure my levels are good. My thyroid improved after my pregnancy believe it or not, but 12 years later I am up to my dose pre-pregnancy.

Boneaching tiredness, I felt like I was wading through treacle on a bad day.

Dry skin, hair falling out.

Very irregular periods.

Sensitivity to heat and cold.

Depression.

The tiredness improves amazingly once you start treatment, and since my recent increase in thyroxine I now have regular periods! Have not had a regular cycle since I was 18 (I'm 36).

I also lost half a stone without any effort (a nice side effect )

I still have sensitivity to temperature and often get into bed with several layers on & a hot water bottle.

Have you got an appointment yet?

Hi rabbitrabbit, i'm over active (due to pregnancy but have had the same sort of symtoms as frayedknot - hair falling out, weight loss but was sweating like hell at night, heart beating fast. Once it's diagnosed it's really easily treated and you'll feel loads better good luck!!!

Hiya
Iwas diagnosed with underactive thyroid 13 years ago after the birth of dd1. I piled on loads of weight having always been stick thin, I was told I was depressed. I was very tired and had pins and needles and all sorts of other things, and kept being told it was because of having just had a baby. Eventually a locum doctor took bloods'just to check thyroid' and it came back as underactive. My GP wrote to me asking for test to be repeated and it came back as underactive again. When I went to see her she had the gall to ask me 'what made ME (meaning her, the gp) decide to do your blood test?' I said you didn't, you kept saying I was fat because of what I put in my mouth and that I was depressed!! Anyway, I have been on 150mcg thyroxine for 13 years and am still fat!! I do think I was possibly borderline overactive as I had palpitations and was so skinny and had quite bulgy eyes (god I sound attractive!). I mentioned to gp about my levels and she insists if you are within the required levels then that's that and waon't increase my dose even though I have treid to explain what I was like before. Good luck with your appointment, let us know how you get on.

very tired, didn't want to do anything, cold, put on weight

GP visit prompted by a family friend (former nurse)
She hadn't seen me for a long time and was horrified at the change in me

My thyroid had stopped completely

suzywong · 02/11/2006 09:53

no excess weight gain here
but I felt as though aliens were sucking my life force from my arms every day at noon. If I lived in Iowa I would probably have joined an Abductee Group and put up loads of crystals in my house.

Please go to the GP immediately and demand a blood test and don't take no for an answer

AnguaVonUberwald · 02/11/2006 09:55

My main symptom was that I was freezing. And i mean: Fully dressed, coat on, inside my home and still would get the duvet to wrap up in!

rabbitrabbit · 03/11/2006 19:51

Thanks for the replies everyone. I recognise many of what's mantioned here so shall definitely be booking an appointment x
