Candida - any experience

Just asking really as I've realised that I have numerous symptoms related to Candida and am wanting to do something about it. Apparently my Doc's don't admit it's existence so am not in a rush to go to the GP's. Does anyone know any homeopathic remedies that may help?

Hi pfer,"candida" is the latin term for good old bog standard thrush,a common fungal infection. You can usually treat it quite simply with over the counter remedies. If it is in the mouth then you can get nystatin(Tho this might be on prescription only) as a liquid or pastilles. If it is for the ladybits you can get canesten cream/pessary.Some people also say natural yog is good.bizarre but true.HTH

Pfer · 01/11/2006 14:49

Hi wrinklytum - no, I don't get thrush very often (only when on antibiotics), just all the other long list of symptoms, inc. bloating, headaches, sinus infections, depression, mood swings, bad pmt and cramps, foggyheadedness, coating on tongue etc.
So I can't treat this with canisten can I? Have read up on this threelac stuff and it targets all of the problems so have ordered some - will have to wait and see if it works.

Hi pfer, sorry probably did not read your op very well,so apologies for that, but candida albicans does usually affect mouth+ mucous membranes, but you were mainly speaking of associated symptoms.Often it can occur when someones immune system is lowered and individuals resistance is lowered. How come your gp doesnt recognise its existence?

Pfer · 01/11/2006 15:54

Hi, I've not been to my GP yet as everything I've read up on about it says that very often GP's do not recognise it unless it's very severe - which my case isn't. And TBH my GP's aren't that sympathetic - last time I went about gaining over 1st in 6 weeks following having the implanon contraceptive implant she said that it wasn't the implant it's just that women of a 'certain age' tend to lay down fat! Had the implant out - lost half the gained weight in 2 weeks!
What made me think about it - sad as it seems - was watching 'diet doctors' on TV. They had a girl on there with loads of symptoms similar to mine, so I surfed the net and sure enough I have 90% of them - except thrush. I used to get this a lot when I was on the pill and just had a bout when I was on antibacs for an ear infection - which is also listed on the candida sites.

Anyway hopefully this threelac will help. It says that a lot of sufferers notices differences in themselves within just a few days, so fingers crossed.

Pfer - strangely enough, i was in holland and barratt today and saw this stuff for candida, it was a homeapathic remedy (cant remember what its called) but it was £4 something (typical of me to notice the price but not the name). if u go on H&B website it will be on there. also there was this other stuff called all i know is it ended in bacollus or something similar. i hope someone will come on and correct me. it was £6 somehting.
i too am wondering if i have candida as i have been having the symptoms for ages now. in fact, i started a thread on 'candida' i will try and find it for u.

ShinyHappyRocketsGoingBANG · 01/11/2006 20:19

Could this be a thread for UCM?

Pfer I bought this book on candida recently. It's quite an eye opener.

If you have candida, you need to work out why the natural balance of your bacteria has been disturbed to allow the fungus to take hold and adcdress the root cause. The drugs will work (nystatin, fluconazole or whatever) but the candida is likely to come back unless you can work out what the problem is.

Have you had anti biotics recently? I seem to crave sugar like mad before a bout of candida (so I'm actually feeding the yeast).

I went to my fab homeopath and he has given me lycopodium as a liver cleanse and Mycopril 680 which is capryilic acid. You should be avoiding sugar, yeast and refined white flour (which is a good idea anyway) and take a good probiotic with acidophulus and bifudus in high concentrations.

The books good and very thourough. I'm currently picking and choosing from it but I feel much better after just a week and a half. He suggests it can take months to properly get your balance sorted.

Spidermama · 01/11/2006 20:27

I've just had it in the mouth pfer and it was following an infection which came after an operation. Annoying eh? I had three lots of anti biotics concurrently and I've caught one thing after another ever since.

I'm quite hopeful about this candida thing. It has flared up in me before so I'd like to get a hold of it.

Pfer - if u click on 'search all messages' at the top of the page, then fill in the words' just type in candida and anything else u want to write and all the posts on candida come up.
not sure how to do links sorry.

Schhh · 01/11/2006 21:08

Pfer - we had quite a long and helpful candida thread on MN recently, but I cant remember who started it.
I had this, when I was in my late teens/early 20s.

Schhh · 01/11/2006 21:11

this is one thread here but if you do a search of mn threads with candida in the title, there are several more.

Starrmum · 02/11/2006 08:36

I'm a newcomer so haven't seen any earlier threads about candida, so apologies if any of this has already been covered.

I suffer from this, and have done (unfortunately!) for years. Thankfully it's relatively rare nowadays, but I have the odd flare up.

It's definitely a hormonal thing, as if I'm going to get it, it will always be around a week 10 days before AF.

These are the things that help:

  1. If you're on the pill, come off it! (bit drastic, but it's one of the key things implicated in candida)
  1. If you have to take antibiotics for any reason make sure you have a good supplement - go to a good health shop rather than Boots/your local chemist - get some acidophulus and bifudus. They should be kept in the fridge, and should be in the fridge in the shop you buy them from. They will help your guts to restore the good bacteria that your body needs that antibiotics will wipe out.
  1. Diet is absolutely key. There is a horribly long list of all the things you shouldn't eat, most of which are things I love (!), but you should be avoiding things like sugar, yeast, fermented foods, smoked foods, all white carbs - flour, pasta, rice, bread, etc. Fruit isn't brilliant because of the sugar and, unfortunately, alcohol is a big no no. (Not that it ever actually stops me )

It's really worthwhile getting a book about diet and how it affects candida. I did have one but I lent it to someone else and can't remember the title I'm afraid! I think it might have been called Living with Candida or something like that - worth doing a search on Amazon or asking at your health food shop.

And I wouldn't rule out going to see your GP - if you can make your case with them they are much more likely to listen. It's worth also just checking out that your symptoms aren't down to anything else.

Hope you get some relief, it's a horrible condition.

Pfer · 02/11/2006 20:11

Thanks for this everyone. Spidermama, I will get that book and have a read.
I've just had antibiotics and have had a bit of a flare up in my mouth but nothing too serious, maybe that's because I've been taking acidophulus to combat bloating? Anyway after looking a bit more into it looks quite likely that I've got this (even though I don't suffer from thrush very often at all these days - though thinking back to when I was on the pill I used to get it every month!)
After reading Starmumms post on what not to eat I think I'll kill myself now! Sigh...

Still thanks for all you help, it's much appreciated.
