Feeling a lump in breast

Dappymummy · 03/04/2015 18:38

I stupidly decided to examine my breasts on day 2 of period on a bank holiday. I suffer from health anxiety so I have worried before about lumps and have had them investigated. I know how to do it properly but decided to prod with one finger tip and discovered a tiny firm lump near my armpit. If I pat 3 flat finger pads on the area it feels normal but can still feel it with one finger. I know we are told to examine with finger pads for a reason. Would most people feel lumps if examining incorrectly. Sorry for rambling but in a bit of a state,

Hi dappy, I didn't want to read and run. First off try to take a deep breath and remind yourself that 90% of lumps are nothing sinister. Then you should go and get your GP to take a look next week when they reopen just for your own peace of mind. They may want to do further scans at the hospital, but again, that doesn't necessarily mean anything bad, just that they are being thorough. I hope you can enjoy the rest of the weekend and put it to the back of your mind until you can see a doctor Thanks

Hi Dappy, I found a lump just before Christmas and I know how scared you must be feeling BUT you must try and stay clam as it's probably nothing sinister. I had a small hard lump, just like a petit pois, behind my nipple and too cut a long story short have recently had it removed. I say it because they were unable to test it before they removed it due to the location but it turned out to be a harmless cyst. My advice to you would be - stop googling - you will convince yourself it's something bad and go to the doctors as soon as possible. You may even find that the lump disappears at the end of your period - this is quite common according to my consultant.

P.s your doctor will probably refer you to the breast clinic for a mamm/ultra sound - this is common practice

If I feel with my fingers i can feel loads of little lumps especially there. Feel the other side maybe and see if you can?

Hi OP. I have health anxiety so can imagine how scared you feel.

It is likely due to feeling wrong but of course you should get it checked to be on the safe side. I once felt my breasts and found a lot things I thought were lumps but turned out I was just feeling wrong.

Can I ask when the best time is in your cycle to check yourself? I try not to google health things for my sanity. I haven't checked in a while because my gp has been trying to get my away from self checking for a while as I obviously get obsessed and end up feeling them every hour.

I am well enough at the moment to check but I am due on today so not sure when best to do it.

Oh and if you ever want to talk your HA over with another sufferer please feel free to PM me any time. I have talked to a few people here before and it is really helpful.
