I have just been diagnosed with reflux and am on medication to control it. My only symptom is a feeling of great weight on my chest.
I'm just wondering if there is anything I can do to help myself, are there any foods I should /should not eat. I'm not overweight and very rarely drink (Christmas was the last time). The doctor never mentioned anything I could do just said I'm likely to be on medication for a very long time which I'm a bit Confused about but will keep taking it until told otherwise.

I have suffered with this for years and pretty much every day. When I was given medication in February, I decided to research it to find out what causes it. I went gluten free and it was gone in under a week! I am not going back on gluten and my medication is untouched. I drink and sometimes overeat but still don't suffer and I sleep so much better.

I've done some research but most recommend - loosing weight (I am not over weight ) - stop smoking (I don't smoke) - don't drink (I dont) - eat no fatty food or large meals (I rarely do)

Maybe gluten is the way to go.
Can I ask where you researched mary

Hi, I can't remember specific websites but Google 'gluten and reflux' and you will find loads of info.

Cutting out caffeine has helped reduce my symptoms massively. My hospital gave me a list of foods to avoid such as tomatoes, spicy food, fruit with hard skin etc. I can't find the online version of it anymore otherwise I would have linked it.

it might help to watch your physical position ,sit down and keep back straight after meals .also sleep in a more elevated position . I prop myself up with pillows ,some people put bed legs on blocks /books .

Some of the Gaviscon remedies ( not all ) have an alginate which forms a raft on top of stomach contents creating a physical barrier to help prevent refux .You might prefer this to meds that cut down acid production .

I tried cutting out loads and nothing helped, in fact it made me go bonkers in the end.

So I just avoided eating too much abd got in with it, suffered for years. It then magically got better about 6 years after it started Confused And I've taken no meds for a couple of years who knows?

I would suggest getting tested for H Pylori if you haven't already, as it's a common cause of reflux symptoms and treatable
