Right side rib pain

Girlsville · 26/03/2015 17:51

I've had a pain which has come and gone in my right rib area (sometimes back) for the last couple of weeks. I'm going to see the Dr next week but am panicking. Has anyone else? A few weeks ago I had some routine blood tests. - cbc liver and kidney function all normal although my cholesterol is about high and I am hypo thyroid.

Gallstones?

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 26/03/2015 17:52

Is it constant or does it come and go? Is it worse if you breathe deeply?

Girlsville · 26/03/2015 18:01

Comes and goes. Sometimes I can feel it a bit in my back too. It's not very painful when it comes but enough that I am aware of it.

Urine infection?

Does it hurt when you pee & are you going to the toilet more than usual?

Girlsville · 26/03/2015 18:45

I don't think it's a urine infection as have had those a lot in the past and had stinging when igi to the toilet, which I don't have now. I guess will see what Dr says and try not to worry before then.

It almost feels a bit like burning sensation and then like the muscle is relaxing/thawing out of that makes any sense!

Is it possible you have a broken/fractured rib?

Pulled muscle?

Costochondritis?

gallstones is my bet

had the same thing, agonising pain under right rib cage, stomach and back/shoulder on right side

had biliary colic, was jaundiced and after a 3 day stint in the hospital (and passing gallstone/s) it was decided I needed pesky gallbladder out.
had scan & MRI while there to confirm gallstones

had laprascopic surgery last Oct to remove gb. all good now.

get diagnosed OP, you need a scan first, don't let them brush you off and tell you it's just indigestion!

good luck

Thanks Zing, did you ever feel it under your breastbone too. I will ask gp about scan. Sometimes it's fine but other times painful. I was just reading that there is also a link between thyroid and gallstones which makes sense.

OP posts:
RawCoconutMacaroon · 27/03/2015 08:26

The link could be gluten op.

Autoimmune thyroid, coeliac(and other gut conditions with an autoimmune component), gallbladder inflammation (causes stones by stopping the gallbladder emptying properly).... Having one seems to predict increased risk of having others.

You might want to ask for a thyroid antibody test, and a Ceoliac
Blood test...

Girlsville · 27/03/2015 09:45

Thanks I will ask.

Grin

hang on

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 27/03/2015 10:04

oh yes, the sternum.
(didn't know it was called breastbone! oops)

yes, I had pain, a lot of cramping, churning pain at the bottom part of the breastbone.
I was saying stomach, but that's a good description too.
so bad wearing a bra was out of question

I really think it's gallstones. loads of people have them and in my head it is the most likely scenario, based on your symptoms.
it does come and go

I had 3 gallstone attacks, last one was when I got jaundiced. horrible.
please get seen asap, if your gb is inflammed ora stone moves you could end up with pancreatitis which is very serious.

and don't let them shrug you off. pester pester pester.
squeaky wheel gets the grease.

next time you are in a lot of pain, especially if you are vomiting call an ambulance. so it's on record that you were admitted. it will speed things up
(and I wouldn't normally suggest to drain NHS resources but when it happened the first time I was pg, and when it happened the last time I was really ill and our surgeon friend said having a medical history recorded will make a big difference in how quickly you can push things.)

Girlsville · 29/03/2015 19:01

Am off to see gp this week so will insist she rakes me seriously.
Would gallstones be indicated in a liver function test? I only ask because I had one a couple of weeks ago and it same back normal.

not necessarily unless there's an infection

gallstones are very common and generally until they cause trouble nobody knows that they have them!

my marernal grandma, uncle and aunt had them and I'm 100 percent sure that if my mum had a scan she would discover she has them too. But she never had any problems so we don't know

do insist on a scan asap, if they are the root of the trouble you need to have them removed, which means gallbladder (gb) out. and soon.

do you see a pattern of more pain after eating fatty food? that is another sign, extra bile production can irritate the gb.
you might want to switch to very low fat diet, no or minimum dairy - standard advice.
and cut out coffee, also irritates the gb
