Steroid injections in toes. Need a hug.

I had two steroid injections this afternoon. They were into the big toe joints.
I was absolutely dreading it as the thought made me feel sick. Secretly I hoped that I was making a fuss over nothing.
OMG! It was bloody awful. I passed out and my blood pressure dropped through the floor. They had to invert the bed to bring it back up. I then burst into tears and couldn't stop shaking.
That was three hours ago. I have to keep off my foot for at least 48 hours. I am currently in bed. Alone. My husband works away and the one son that lives at home has gone to football.
The local anaesthetic has worn off and it bloomin hurts. I still feel very shocked about it all.
Am I being a complete wuss about this? Has anyone else had these?
I just need a virtual hug really.

Oh god that sounds awful, why were u getting that done?

Trumpton · 23/03/2015 20:22

Oh that sounds horrible for you. Can you reach painkillers or phone someone to come round with tea and sympathy ?

CoveredInWit · 23/03/2015 20:29

Aw you poor thing. Injections into the toes are the absolute worst as they are so full of nerve endings. I've never had one but I'm a GP so I've done them and I always feel awful about it! You are definitely not a wuss.

The pain will often flare once the anaesthetic wears off so don't be afraid to mainline the painkillers for the next few days. It'll gradually ease so you'll be at your worst now. Tea, sympathy and Thanks

I have arthritis and something called Friebergs syndrome. Basically my foot bone is crumbling away. Nice.

My son has come home now.

I can honestly say that I would rather give birth than do that again. If ever it came to the point of having to have it done, I would have to have a general anaesthetic. It was so painful. The local was bloody awful. He said that it would be ok once that bit was over. He lied.

Thank you Covered. I feel better knowing that it is officially painful, iyswim. The dr said that it was "very tight". What does that mean?

I'd guess that there wasn't much space between the two bones for him to get the needle into. I had it done once, and it hurt like hell. Flowers

CoveredInWit · 24/03/2015 09:06

Yep, Shadowfax has it- the joint space has probably been narrowed by arthritis. That makes it trickier to get the needle in to.

Hope you're feeling better today Thanks

i had one between my toes for neuroma. it felt like they were injecting lightning straight into my foot.

awful, and it didn't bloody workAngry

Hulababy · 24/03/2015 09:12

Sounds awful; hope it improves soon. Keep on with the pain killers.

I've had them under the knee cap for arthritis and that was bad enough, toes sound horrid

MrsMyrtleMarple · 24/03/2015 12:45

Feeling ok this morning. Mainling the painkillers.
Didn't sleep well as I kept reliving the whole horrid experience.

Yes I have had this done
I didn't find it too bad tbh
Have you got any pain meds.to take?

Baddz · 24/03/2015 12:49

Well.it isn't pleasant
I am Sat here today after some major dental work.and feeling quite sorry for myself Sad
Keep taking the meds, would some ice help?

If dorsiflexion of the toe (moving upwards) is painful, you could try limiting movement in the joint but using a rigid soled shoe. Alternatively you could see a podiatrist for them to fabricate something to go into your shoe to 'splint' the joint.
The less it moves the quicker the joint will naturally fuse, usually leading to a pain free joint.

I had a steroid injection last year that went obliquely from the bottom of my foot into a joint space. Smarted.

MrsMyrtleMarple · 24/03/2015 14:50

OMG merde. I would most definitely have passed out if it had been in the bottom of my foot. Did it work?

OP posts:
MerdeAlor · 24/03/2015 18:50

Yes it did work, although the results are temporary. It hurt like a bastard but I took neurofen and paracetamol beforehand so I guess more managable than if I hadn't!

The other thing you could try to relieve pain in the big toe joints is mobilisation of the joint (may not help) and acupuncture around the joint which can be fantastic.

MrsMyrtleMarple · 24/03/2015 22:19

"Hurt like a bastard" just about sums it up.
