My daughter has been diagnosed with IBS, we have a perscription for Buscopan. Its getting worse and taking her back to the GP, but at my whits end trying to help her. Its been going on for years and I thought it was nerves and certainly gets worse at times of stress - A2's looming and I need to find a solution.

Can any one help?

how did they get to the diagnosis? have they run tests to exclude other possibilities? and has she tried am exclusion diet to make sure it's not a severe intolerance?

Please ask for a referral to a Gastro doctor. I have Crohn's disease & my consultant said IBS should never be given as a diagnosis until every other possibility has been ruled out & a GP should never diagnose & treat IBS. I hope you're daughter feels better soon.

Bless her I really feel for her. I'm sure you know but stress is a major trigger for IBS. Try make sure she gets some relaxation time whether it be exercising or a bath. It's really important to keep the stress levels down, although during exams it's hard.

Have you looked at Fodmaps? This has helped me no end. Have posted a link hope it works. If not google. It's a list of foods that trigger IBS to avoid. Try that but if it doesn't work after a month or so go back to doctor.
I've managed mine for two years now having discovered my trigger foods, so it will get better. Good luck

How did you get on with gp?

poppyinstitches · 17/03/2015 22:02

he thinks with no other symptoms that it is IBS and suggested the FODMAP diet, peppermint capsules and more Buscopan. Daughter has to keep a diary of events and will look at it after 3 months. He doesn't think she needs to be reffered just yet. So had a read of a few websites and picking up a copy of the fodmap diet book.

Has she been tested for coeliac disease? It is just a blood test at first, coeliac should also be ruled out before diagnosing IBS, there are guidelines for GPs to follow on this.

IDismyname · 17/03/2015 22:49

I follow the FODAP diet, but it should really be under the direction of a dietitian who knows about the diet itself. It helps many, many people with IBS. There are several FB groups which are good, esp the UK based ones, dealing with FODMAP friendly foods.
I find the peppermint capsules really helpful.

Definitely see if you can pinpoint any foods that make it worse. I can't eat white bread/pastry type things without having a flair up, usually after 24 hours or so.
Also seem to have an intolerance to garlic (pretty instant reaction) and onions (few hours).

Thank you everyone for all your brilliant advice!
