Funny Start of Discharge/Bleed

Sorry about the title, didn't know how else to title this one. I don't mean to be insensitive, but don't know if I should get this checked out further.

I don't know if any of you have had this. First let me explain what it is I have got, and then you can comment.

My baby is 5.5 months old and I have been having periods since she was 11 weeks old. My periods are very regular and I have an IUD fitted (not the first time I have had one fitted).

Now, whenever my period is due, about 3/4 days before hand I get a funny sort of discharge/start of bleed. Sometimes, towards the end of my period, I used to get what I would call "old blood", i.e. brown instead of fresh red. Now, I seem to get this "old blood" before my new period starts which, when it starts properly, is fresh blood. I don't get mid monthly spotting or bleeding when I am ovulating, but when my period is due to start, as it is now, I am getting this "string-like" gooey "old blood" discharge.

Has anyone else had this - or is anyone aware of whether I should get this checked out further.

I have just had a smear test which came back clear - this was after having a colposcopy for a "dodgy" smear in August 2000 and also again in January 2001. My baby was born in October and, because of my suspect smear in the past, I now have to have yearly smear tests. The most recent one was fine but I still have to go back in one year.

poor old you Bumblelion.. its never ending is it... I definitely think you should talk to A Dr ... try NHS Direct if you don't want to go to your GP yet.
Good luck

Bumblelion, I started to get those type of periods too, almost like it takes a day or so to "get going" and the same thing at the end, sort of "winding down". I wondered if it had anything to do with age as it started for me in my early thirties (when I was younger, when my period started it was heavy from the start). I'm sure it's nothing to worry about, especially as you're smears have been ok.

mears · 16/04/2002 18:20

Don't worry - I have the exact same thing and did get checked out. It is due to progesterone levels dropping and is the lining of the womb starting to shed just prior to the whole shebang!
I was offered hormone treatment which I tried that didn't make much difference. I just accept it now as a woman's lot.

If you are worried do visit your GP.

Thanks for all your advice. I have to take my baby to the doctor's next Tuesday and have phoned up and they are booking into see me too. I do believe it isn't anything to worry about but it will ease my mind to have it checked out anyway. Thanks again.

Bumblelion, I noticed that on another thread you mentioned that you are sleeping in separate beds from your husband. Have I missed this on another thread? Has your relationship broken down? Are you wanting to get back together or are you sleeping apart for practical reasons???

Bumblelion · 18/04/2002 16:32

Sister, my husband moved up into the loft just after Valentine's Day as we are now separating! although he is still living in my house.

how is that, bumblelion? I followed that thread with sympathy and horror (for you!) You've been quiet for a while. How's it all going? Any chance of reconcilliation? Hope you're ok

tufty · 18/04/2002 18:15

How are things Bumblelion? thinking of you...

Lill · 18/04/2002 21:56

Bumblelion hope all is well. Can I sugest you go back to your gp to double check. Also, I have been informed that policy has changed and it is now not recommended that smears are done until At Least 6 months Postpartum as the cervix is still changing after the birth and therfore results are unreliable. Perhaps you could raise this with your gp.
Best wishes

I had my smear test in February after my baby was born in October. I am going to the doctors on Tuesday for the baby, and will also ask about this funny bleed/discharge.

I am not worried about the smear test as it came back "normal" although I have to have another one done in a year because of my dodgy ones in the past.

I am not sure if this funny discharge might have something to do with having the coil fitted?!? I will mention that to my doctor as well, as I had it fitted at the family planning clinic.

Unfortunately, we have no chance of a reconciliation - I want it, he doesn't.

Bumblelion, I used to fit coils a few years ago and what you describe is well recognised as a result of having a coil. I haven't done any family planning for a while but I used to discuss it as one of the possible consequences of a coil. I hope your doctor will be able to reassure you, I expect that everything is fine.

Lollypop · 05/05/2002 11:09

I'm not sure how to put this. I'm six weeks pregnant and have that sort of discharge (light brown/pink) today. Never had this with my first child. As its Bank Holiday Sunday I cannot do much until Tuesday. Is it just hormonal or something more worrying?

Bumblelion I had the same thing before my periods but I didn't have a coil. What was the outcome?

jodee · 05/05/2002 13:28

Lollypop, it may be nothing to worry about but if I were you I'd rest as much as possible and maybe ring the out of hours doctor for advice. If it gets any heavier I would definitely ring, and make an appointment to see your gp first thing on Tuesday. I really hope all is OK, do let us know. xx

Joe1 · 05/05/2002 17:07

Lollypop, can you not ring your midwife or even your maternity ward, it would make you feel better.

tigermoth · 06/05/2002 10:56

lollypop, I agree. Ringing the out of hours doctor or maternity ward is a definitely a good idea. Just as a precaution. Hope all is well.

Paula1 · 06/05/2002 17:45

Lollypop, how are you? Couldn't stop thinking about you since I read your post yesterday, I am also about the same pg as you.

Lollypop · 06/05/2002 21:30

Thanks for all your comments. Had a good rest & its have stopped now. I will ring the doctor in the morning.

tufty · 09/05/2002 18:51

lollypop...how are you? hope all is well. tufty

Lollypop · 09/05/2002 20:42

Hi Tufty. I'm back to 'normal' now. I spoke to the nurse (couldn't get an appointment to see a Doc)and she didn't think there was a problem. I feel a lot happier in myself so perhaps it was the hormones.

tufty · 15/05/2002 21:56

Phew! glad you are OK. Take care...
