Is this correct? (Period blood loss volumes) Mooncup users please share...

The average amount of blood lost during a period is 30-40 millilitres (ml), with 9 out of 10 women losing less than 80ml. Heavy menstrual bleeding is considered to be 60-80ml or more in each cycle.

I've just worked out that I've been to the loo 12 times since 6am. On each occasion my mooncup has been full. So 15ml x 12. Plus lots of clots & blood if I bear down whilst on toilet. Plus overflow onto 5 towels during day.

It's getting a bit life limiting (7-10 day period. This is day 3).

Do some people lose so little?

I don't want any more children. What should I be hoping for from GP? I've asked a few times but they want to fit a coil. I'm not keen on them - scared of weight gain (have just lost 5 stone), constant bleeding, links to mental disturbance (I am take sertraline already for PTSD).

I'm hoping it will be a similar story for me. Flooded twice more in Sun through mooncup, pad, pants & jeans. With about ten seconds notice. Would have been awful in class :(

GP appt at 10.40 today. Still bleeding but only 30ml/day ish now.

Referred for a scan and a myriad of blood tests.

Mirena and implant pushed hard. Apparently 99% of people love them but you only hear from those who don't. I just can't face the risk :(

Moving in the right direction. A referral of any sort seems positive in the current NHS climate.

Good luck

I am dealing with exactly the same thing. Filling up my menstrual cup 6-10 times a day, having to rush back to the bathroom after literally 2 mins because a huge clot has filled it. Sad The menstrual cup I use is the MeLuna XL, which has a capacity of 42ml. It's the biggest capacity you can get on the market and it's worth sizing up if you have really heavy bleeding (although it still doesn't contain my flow).

I already knew I had a fibroid which causes my bleeding but a scan last week showed it had grown to 10cm, and blood tests have shown I'm anaemic. Recently, in the past couple of months, I haven't had any blood-free days at all Sad. My GP was a bit rubbish about it for years, but I've switched to a new one who is more positive about treatment and taking me seriously, so I've been reading up on various options.

Hope you get some answers with the scan and tests OP.

Mooncup user here with a copper coil (not Mirena).

Probably lose 10 ml day 1/4/5/6 (if that on day 6)
Day 2 it's about 100 ml plus (can fill a mooncup in 45 minutes with GIANT clots the size of cherry tomatoes) so use mooncup + pad
Day 3 it's about 50 ml

So that adds up to about 200 ml overall. I tried Tranexamic Acid but it didn't do anything. No fibroids, apparently. The plan is to have babies (coil coming out in next six month) then have a hysterectomy; I have a connective tissue disorder which is much worse when I'm on so it should hopefully help with that.

When I first measured it, I was astounded because I remember being told at school (when the Tampax lady came round with her free samples) that the average period was 15 mls.

Fourarmsv2 · 18/03/2015 23:29

That's interesting postapocalytic - I'll order one of those now.

Sorry to hear others are suffering.

Would ablation not be worth a try first emwithme? Good luck with TTC :)

Right, in the interests of research, I monitored blood loss.
I lost about 30ml - 2 meluna medium cups half full after 12 hrs each, and then dregs in the bottom for the next few days. I'd say it was on the light side of normal, but not excessivly so. I would definatly be in the 9/10 loosing less than 80ml.
Sorry.

Fourarmsv2 · 02/04/2015 21:17

Blood tests all came back normal with the exception of full blood count showing that I'm anaemic.

Called into GP to discuss as it's quite low. Explained I take spatone already with Vit C to aid absorption. Diet heavy in red meat and green veg (low carbing).

Have now got a referral to gynae. No news yet on scan date but that shouldn't be much longer. GP very keen to push mirena but I said no to that.

Sorry. Glad the GP is taking it seriously, and referring.

Blush Addictedtosugar - it was a nice Envy

Miele72 - I get very breathless. Put it down to being v.overweight but I've lost 5 stone and still struggle with it.

Having bad cramps today. Thought I'd already ovulated this month so either period is coming early or it's a double month (have these fairly regularly - 11YO DS1 is the happy result of such a month!). Either way it's bad news. If I ovulate twice my period is always extra heavy, must be something to do with hormone levels. Sad

Going to monitor very closely this month.

Day 1 - bit of old blood
Day 2 - so far 10, 12.5 and 15+

So already over the average in the first 12 hours of real bleeding. Have to get more bloods done so going for those on Tue. Will be interesting to see how results differ mid-period.

Sad

How low were your levels re:anaemia?
It sounds like an absolute nightmare, and not something you should have to put up with. I'm glad your GP is taking it seriously, and hopefully your appt won't take too long to come through.

Fourarmsv2 · 12/04/2015 22:41

Not horrific - borderline between mild and moderate. But when I went to the GP she suggested iron tablets.... I already take the max recommended dose of spatone each day with 1000mg of vit C (to enhance iron absorption).

58ml+ in total today (two pads used for overflow :( )

OP posts:
chocnomorechoc · 12/04/2015 22:59

spatone is not a strong iron supplement. My GP told me not to take them but to takeferrous sulfate 200mg (iron tablets) instead. I would give them a go. pharmacy sells them over the counter

Fourarmsv2 · 13/04/2015 07:38

Really :( Wish she'd said - I did take packaging. Just checked and it's Fereglobin capsules I'm taking at the moment. They're nowhere near 200mg though. Will try to get to pharmacy today.

30ml+ plus lost overnight - middle of night and first thing on waking.

OP posts:
Fourarmsv2 · 13/04/2015 07:38

First day of term too for what is usually the heaviest day :(

OP posts:
Fourarmsv2 · 13/04/2015 23:24

Day 2 of proper period - ending the day at 150ml+ so far.

OP posts:
badRoly · 13/04/2015 23:31

That's crap, the volumes you are measuring are ridiculous - and I'm someone who thought they had heavy periods Confused

I couldn't do more than an hour on my heaviest day with a MoonCup. I went to a website called Feminine Wear and joined the Facebook group.

There are loads of different menstrual cups out there and I found them really helpful in sorting out the best cup for me (a LuvUrBody large). Now I can go a sensible 3 hours on my heavy day Grin

I know that doesn't solve the cause of the horrific bleeding but it might help deal with the consequences Smile

badRoly · 13/04/2015 23:32

I forgot to say, MoonCups are amongst the smallest capacity cups available so not great if you have heavy flow/flooding.

GuiltyAsAGirlCanBe · 13/04/2015 23:41

I have not had a single period since I had my Mirena fitted.

I maintain a normal bmi - I have even lost weight since having it - though it was baby weight.

I suffer very few side effects, but suffered horribly with the combined a progesterone only pill.

Why not try the Mirena first? It is far less invasive.

Fourarmsv2 · 14/04/2015 07:01

I'm really worried that the bleeding would increase and they wouldn't take it out. I'm worried about the side effects.

But.... Having joined a FB group for people who have had ablation I see that's not without potential issues. :(

OP posts:
Fourarmsv2 · 14/04/2015 07:06

Maybe I need to get the GP to give me a promise they'll take it out ASAP if required.

badRoly - have tried a couple of others but the plastic wasn't strong enough for my pelvic floor muscles and they got pushed out. I will join that group and ask for advice on there though ;)
