Weaning myself off supplements

I am a single mother of five. My eldest is 19 my youngest is twelve. I have a good job but I am self employed ie if I don't work we don't have money. I worry so much about falling ill and not being able to look after my family. I get £7/week for all of them from their dad!!!! So I have been taking every health supplement I can until I sat down and worked out much I spent over the year. I would think it's close to £500 per annum. I have stopped but I am so worried I will get ill. Yes I know I'm a bit loopy but I need some moral support

Whar supplements are you taking, and for what reason?

specialsubject · 14/03/2015 13:18

not loopy, just need some knowledge.

if you are in normal health, are not pregnant, are not a child and are not over 65 and you eat properly you have absolutely no need of supplements.

mousmous · 14/03/2015 14:44

healthy people with a good diet only need vit d in the winter months.
if vegetarian/vegan vit b12 as well.

Healthy people who get outside enough in the summer can store vitamin D and don't need supplements. (This does not mean getting sunburnt).

get tested if you are worried.

OP - you are almost certainly creating expensive coloured urine with your supplements. Save your money!

just take a good multi-vit. It will keep you in good nick by won't cost a fortune.

I'm a working LP and don't have the time or energy to eat a perfect diet. I always take a basic multi-vit and mineral tablet.

specialsubject · 14/03/2015 17:28

you don't need a perfect diet, you just need a good mix of the right nutrients. Unless you are living on pot noodles, sugary diet foods and cereal bars you should be fine. Even baked beans and ready meals contain nutrition.

some vitamins can be harmful in overdose; others, like vitamin C, just create expensive urine.
