Sudden loss of ability to grip with thumb

In a matter of a moment, with no apparent cause or injury I went from being able to hold a pen to simply not holding a pen well enough to write. My right thumb is almost completely useless as of 3pm today.

Pain is quite localised to thumb and ball of thumb. If I try to widen out my palm and fingers, I can't really do it. Equally I can't really clench the thumb in to a fist or stretch thumb across my palm.

Fingers ok, so can pick up with fingers clenching into palm, but nothing involving thumb. Hasn't lost sensation, doesn't have pins and needles, just hard to move without considerable pain.

What on earth could it be? It's really quite painful, and trying to get basics together for supper, and chop is proving very difficult.

I don't think it is cramp, it's more like some kind of restriction very localised to the base of the thumb (but thankfully hasn't got worse!)

A warm pack/hottie is a good idea. Thanks.

Did you fall over or bash it in last week? A claimant (I'm a lawyer) had such an injury and it took a week to develop - they'd torn a v v tiny ligament at base of their thumb

Hmm. Cant think of anything at all. I was at home, at the computer doing work admin, went to pick up a pen to jot something and just could not hold the pen! Like a switch from ok to not ok in an instant.

But a tiny ligament tear/strain does kind of fit with this, as it is very localised. Is your claimant claiming for a thumb ligament tear? That is a genuine question by the way, as I am also a lawyer (not PI though!).

I'm not PI either now - it was in my PI seat as a defendant trainee. Yes they were claiming, we were defending (I'm now commercial property!). How's the thumb?!
