DS (27 months) has got an eye infection. My mum was given chloramphenicol eye drops 0.5% 1 week ago also for an eye infection and still has some left unused. Can we use the left-over drops for DS?

I wouldn't. It might not be the same infection and your mum's bottle may transfer bugs onto your ds's eyes. And the medication itself was prescribed to an adult, not a child. If you can't go to a doctor, then go to a pharmacy.

My ds gets eye infections and we get the optrex infected eyes drops which contain chloramphenicol over the counter at the chemist. You can use them on children over 2 years! I wouldnt give them as often as they say for adults though.

If you are still breastfeeding, dripping a little breastmilk in his eye clears up a lot of infections, and doesn't hurt, either. (I did it to DS1 when he was 4, and he said it was fine.)

Our GP doesn't prescribe Antibiotics for eye infections any more as new research suggests they are not necessary unless infection is particularly severe or shows no signs of getting better within 3-5 days.

(He was right BTH in DD3s case (4months ish at the time).

I wouldn't for the reasons belgo says. Also, has your ds been seen by a doctor? There are some eye problems that look like conjuntivitis but aren't.
