ear infection and perforated eardrum. ow.

I've had a nasty ear infection (following on from tonsillitis and sinusitis) which resulted in a perforated eardrum. Have been on strong ABs since Tuesday and the pressure of the infection seems to have reduced. But I have no hearing at all in the affected ear, loud tinnitus and intermittent pain particularly in noisy environments. Feel a bit dizzy when walking, too.

I'm not sure if this is the tail end off the infection or the pain of the ruptured eardrum? Has anyone had similar and how long did it last - I've been off work all week and due back on Monday but still feel poo.

No idea, that sounds hideous.

I think Madthing5s hearing is still a bit affected by hers tbh and she covers her ear if its noisy etc so obviousky still bothers her.

If no improvment soon i would go back to gp.

((Hugs)) feel better soon.

I had this over Christmas, doctors gave me a course of antibiotics but a two week course didn't touch it. It was awful, the pressure and the loss of hearing, but the worst was the fluid that kept constantly draining out of my ear.

The doctors then referred me to an ear clinic where they cleaned them out with micro suction and gave me antibiotic ear drops with a steroid in them and within a few days they were almost back to normal.

It took about 5/6 weeks for the perforation to completely heal. I could make my ears whistle if I blew my nose! Was a great party trick. Hope you feel better soon Flowers

Oh god you poor thing. I had this at this time last year. I have honestly never felt so ill and I'm not a wimp.

Like you I had very dulled hearing in the worst affected ear (the one with the perforation) and that took a long time to resolve.

I ended up having about 4 different courses of antibiotics, the last of which did do the job, although I still didn't feel right for quite a while.

One thing I would say is if there is any return of fever etc., go back to the doctors.

Hope you feel better soon. You have my every sympathy.

Ah thank you everyone. I am really fed up with it now as you can tell! I only have a week's course of antibiotics which runs out on Tuesday so if I'm not feeling any better by Monday I think I'll go back to the GP. I'm really bored of being at home and I've used up all my paid sick days so I really need to get back to work but as soon as I'm in a noisy environment I feel crap again. Oh and I still have bunged up sinuses and a runny nose - that's been nearly two weeks now!

My dd had simular go gave her a nasal spray with steroid in it - cleared up in 2 days after 2 weeks of agony

goodasitgets · 07/03/2015 19:38

I have just had exactly the same. Ear is just starting to feel better 3/4 weeks on. It's crap

HoggleHoggle · 07/03/2015 19:44

I had this a few years ago and it was horrendous. I remember just sitting and crying in the bath after having been up all night in agony.

My pain went fairly soon after I started antibiotics. I had that horrible full pressure for a solid fortnight iirc, then one day I woke up and it was gone. I was so bloody relieved!

The affected ear is still dodgy when I have colds etc and I can tell something happened to it but luckily my hearing is fine as far as I can tell.

Hope you feel much better very soon.
