raised ALT in liver function tests - can anyone advise?

Dh has just had some blood text results back, about which he's really worried. He had a general blood test 3 months ago which picked up high ALT levels in his liver.

He has gone no alcohol for 3 months and had another test which still shows raised levels. He's very worried. GP has asked him to make a non-urgent appt to discuss - so he has booked one for 2 weeks away.

Has anyone else had the same? What does it mean, and what can they do? Is it bad news?? Dh drinks very little so it can't be anything alcohol-related. BUt what else affects the liver? Afraid to google...

Has he changed or started any medication in the past few months? I ask thi because my ALT count went up to nearly 700 (was less than 35 a wk earlier). Turned out it was a reaction to antibiotics I had started. Was back to normal three wks after stopping the antibiotics. Mine was a drastic change, perhaps your OH has a reaction that's less drastic??? Just a thought.

P.S I drink zero alcohol so GP new it couldn't have anything to do with that.

Gallstones?

CocktailQueen · 07/03/2015 23:41

No medication at all.
No symptoms either, so not sure about gallstones - you get pain with them, don't you?

Not necessarily. Apparently around 1:7 adults have them and have no idea. I have only ever had one flare up 2 years ago but I know they're there! Seen them on the scan following concerns regarding raised liver enzymes in a routine blood test.

Has he had an infection of any sort recently?

Several years ago I was referred for an urgent CT scan of my liver because my ALT levels were raised.

The doctor who scanned me was initially very re-assuring, telling me there and then that he could find nothing abnormal. He asked why I had been referred and when I told him he took a closer look at my blood results, confirmed that my ALT levels were unusually high and went to find a colleague to scan me again in case he had missed something obvious.

The second doctor couldn't see anything amiss either and suggested that a bout of labyrinthitis, a badly infected in growing toenail and the repeated courses of antibiotics I had been prescribed might be the cause of the problem.

Although I was well in myself my GP was super cautious and arranged for my liver enzymes to be checked every couple of months afterwards. They improved and stabilised but never reached completely normal levels and after 12 months there seemed little point in carrying on. Every blood test I've had since has produced the same slightly abnormal result

Within the last 6 months I've been referred to the hospital for a completely different problem and when the Consultant was going through my blood results he remarked upon my slightly raised ALT levels and said that he wasn't concerned about them because they appeared to be normal for me.

Easier said than done I know OP, but try not to worry too much. If your OH's GP had been really concerned he would have asked him to make an urgent appointment rather than routine one.

Hmm, he had labyrinthitis a few months ago and took anti-nausea pills for that for a month. Would that still be causing problems? His ALT levels have gone from 41 2 months ago to 49 - and he hasn't drunk alcohol in the past 6 weeks. He spoke to the GP, today who said to come back for another blood test in 6 months. DH still worried...

This is just above the upper limit of normal.

Most likely it's down to weight and diet and nothing to worry about.

CocktailQueen · 09/03/2015 21:38

He's a bit overweight but not much. Pretty healthy diet. It does have a sweet tooth... Can he do anything to improve it, Hello?
