Too many dirty nappies?

Our dd (7 months) loves her food and milk and has always had a highly effective digestive system - a normal day being 2 dirty nappies in the morning and one later on. Since being weaned and starting teething in the last 6 weeks this has increased - four or five dirty nappies a day is quite common and they are occasionally loose even when she is perfectly well or just has a slight cold.

Is this something to worry about?

If not, the only problem is that our nursery insist on sending her home when she has done three nappies and there is some looseness as they see this as evidence of infection. I can see this happening a lot. For instance, she fed heavily yesterday but, unusually, didn't purge at night or in the early morning. She then promptly did this three times in her first hour at nursery and was sent home. She's drooling and a bit congested with a cold but not especially ill seeming.

Any advice?

get a new nursery?

is she having a lot of fruit/juice? maybe increase baby rice etc and cut down apple puree type stuff?
think banana and sweet potato are supposed to be constipating so maybe worth a try?
also I found DD would always be loose when has a cold as swallowing loads of mucus (yuck)

Is there any reason to be concerned by her frequency? Four or five bowel movements every day seems an awful lot. She's a big girl and puts on weight hugely (but not really overfed), so she maybe is an efficient processor?

hiya, my baba is one at the end of this month and im about to change her 4th dirty nappy of the day. this doesnt happen every day, but im not concerned. sometimes i think she is just making up for days when she only has one.

Gnu - my DD was like this too. Sometimes it can be a sign of teething (although some GPs think that this simply does not happen with teething - I'm sure a lot of Mums would tell you otherwise!).

However, my DD's main problem was lactose intolerance. Took ages to get to the bottom of it (pardon the pun) and I'm still fighting (or have rather given up) with GPs about it. It didn't really come to light properly until I stopped breastfeeding completely at 14 mo and started giving her cows milk to drink.

It could be an allergy to something (or more likely an intolerance). The signs of intolerance are often loose, smelly stools several times a day. I assume you are weaning now.... could it be something she is eating?

Don't wish to worry you - hope it's just teething. I'd speak to the nursery manager though and say it really isn't on - your daughter will never be there if she is going to do this every time a tooth is cutting!!

my DS does between 0 and 4 or 5 poos in a day (7 months) I thought this was normal? (he poos alot if hes been greedy the day before)

Twohootsandapumpkin · 26/10/2006 17:09

Quootie - it can be normal too - all los are different. Originally when I expressed concern to my HV all those months ago she said not to worry - but in the end there did turn out to be a problem with DD (sorry don't want to be alarmist - just giving options).

my dd is the same quootiepie, and ds was just the same at this age too. I put it down to a change in diet and in the case of my two, just being plain greedy. It always reflects the last meal they had too, ie if dd eats sweetpotato she has orange poo etc. I'll be buggered if the nursery senf her home after 3 dirty napppies!

I suppose I have to be fair to the nursery and mention that she did three nappies in about 40 minutes and the last one was vast and ended up mostly in her hair!

Nonetheless, it did worry me when they explained that their policy was to send home after 3.
